Now roll up the Carius tube (while still in a vertical position) in a strip of ordinary thick drying paper, and then place it in the heavy iron protector tube if the Carius tube is too short and tends to disappear within the iron tube, a short section of old glass tubing should first be placed in the iron tube so that the capillary of the Carius tube just projects. The function of the paper is to protect the Carius tubing from being scratched, and also (more important) to prevent the local overheating which would otherwise occur at places where the Carius tube is in direct contact with the iron tube. The sealed tube, throughout its manipulation, should be left as nearly vertical as possible, so that the contents do not leave the rounded end. [Pg.420]

Electrical. Glasses are used in the electrical and electronic industries as insulators, lamp envelopes, cathode ray tubes, and encapsulators and protectors for microcircuit components, etc. Besides their abiUty to seal to metals and other glasses and to hold a vacuum and resist chemical attack, their electrical properties can be tailored to meet a wide range of needs. Generally, a glass has a high electrical resistivity, a high resistance to dielectric breakdown, and a low power factor and dielectric loss. [Pg.299]

A high yield chemical pulp, eg, 52—53% bleached yield from softwoods, can be obtained, but strength properties ate inferior to those obtained from the kraft process. If a protector, eg, potassium iodide, is added, an additional 2—3% yield is obtained, as is an improvement in all strength properties. The gas penetration problem can be minimized if ftbetization is accompHshed before treatment with oxygen. Oxygen treatment of virtually all types of semichemical and mechanical pulps has been explored (55). Caustic, sodium bicarbonate, and sodium carbonate have been used as the source of base (56,57). In all cases, the replacement of the kraft by these other processes has not been justified over the alternative of pollution abatement procedures. [Pg.271]

A clinical trial to evaluate misoprostol as a protector of normal tissue during a course of XRT in cancer patients suggests a reduction in acute normal tissue injury (215). A randomized, prospective, double-blind study indicates that topical misoprostol, administered as an oral rinse 15-20 min before irradiation using conventional 2-Gy (200 rad) fractions, five days a week over 6—7 weeks, significantly protects the oral mucosa from radiomucositis, a frequently observed normal tissue complication during XRT for head and neck cancer (215). [Pg.497]

Two suppliers to the U.S. market are Bayer and Nippon Zeon. The estimated volume used in the United States is 500 700 t/yr. Hydrogenated nitrile mbber (HSN or HNBR) compounds compete with EKM, EVMQ, ECO, ACM, and high ACN content nitrile mbbers. Big applications include automotive timing belts, blowout preventors, drill pipe protectors, and numerous oil and fuel pump components. [Pg.232]

Multilayered structures play an important role in the production of, e.g., biomaterials, catalysts, corrosion protectors, detectors/diodes, gas and humidity sensors, integral circuits, optical parts, solar cells, and wear protection materials. One of the most sophisticated developments is a head-up-display (HUD) for cars, consisting of a polycarbonate substrate and a series of the layers Cr (25 nm), A1 (150 nm), SiO, (55 nm), TiO, (31 nm), and SiO, (8 nm). Such systems should be characterized by non-destructive analytical methods. [Pg.411]

A substantial part of the market for the ethylene-vinyl acetate copolymer is for hot melt adhesives. In injection moulding the material has largely been used in place of plasticised PVC or vulcanised rubber. Amongst applications are turntable mats, base pads for small items of office equipment and power tools, buttons, car door protector strips and for other parts where a soft product of good appearance is required. Cellular cross-linked EVA is used in shoe parts. [Pg.276]

Supporting the hydrated ferric oxide chips is a combination of a perforated, heavy metal support plate and a coarse support packing material. This material may consist of scrap pipe thread protectors and 2-3-in. sections of small diameter pipe. This provides support for the bed, while offering some protection against detrimental pressure surges. [Pg.181]

An unprotected rising stem that is corroded or painted can make the valve difficult to operate. Stem protectors and keeping the stem packed in grease help alleviate this problem. [Pg.432]
