In order to reduce or eliminate off-line sample preparation, multidimensional chromatographic techniques have been employed in these difficult analyses. LC-GC has been employed in numerous applications that involve the analysis of poisonous compounds or metabolites from biological matrices such as fats and tissues, while GC-GC has been employed for complex samples, such as arson propellants and for samples in which special selectivity, such as chiral recognition, is required. Other techniques include on-line sample preparation methods, such as supercritical fluid extraction (SFE)-GC and LC-GC-GC. In many of these applications, the chromatographic method is coupled to mass spectrometry or another spectrometiic detector for final confirmation of the analyte identity, as required by many courts of law. [Pg.407]

In the 1930s ducts or nozzles surrounding highly loaded propellers were introduced. Experiments had shown that propeller efficiency was improved, and many of these devices (often referred to as Kort nozzles) have been used in tugs and fishing boats. Theoretical analysis of ducted propellers has shown that the efficiency can be improved compared to conventional propellers when some of the thrust is produced by the fluid flow around the nozzle. [Pg.1043]

Fundamental research in pyrotechnics is published in the US in Combustion and Flame by the Combustion Institute, and in the UK in Combustion Science and Technology and in Fuel . Germany has the new, journal, Propellants and Explosives (German Chemical Society), which is the successor to the discontinued Explosivstoffe . A necessary caveat is that these journals are strongly oriented toward combustion or propulsion so that only rarely do they yield pyrotechnic information. Friedly (F4) expanded the theoretical analysis of Hart and McClure and included second-order perturbation terms. His analysis shows that the linear response of the combustion zone (i.e., the acoustic admittance) is not sign-ficantly altered by the incorporation of second-order perturbation terms. However, the second-order perturbation terms predict changes in the propellant burning rate (i.e., transition from the linear to nonlinear behavior) consistent with experimental observation.
