Determination of the combustion velocity as a function of the pressure, the measurement of the ignition delay, the study of the combustion of the propellant under laser radiation (for a stability analysis), the analysis of the combustion residuals. For applications where the engine will be subject to high acceleration, it will be necessary to analyze the eventual effects of the acceleration towards the combustion velocity. [Pg.173]

Many chemical and physical analysis techniques have been applied to the study of solid propellant aging. Valuable contributions have been made in improving formulations and in establishing confidence in the stability of propellants for a variety of applications. Fortunately, many... [Pg.247]

Probably the most important characteristic of military and commercial explosives and solid rocket propellants is performance as related to end use and safety. Performance can be described by a variety of conventional properties such as thermal stability, shock sensitivity, friction sensitivity, explosive power, burning, or detonation rate, and so on. Thermal analysis methods, according to Maycock (51), show great promise for providing information on both these conventional properties and other parameters of explosive and propellant systems. The thermal properties have been determined mainly by TG and DTA techniques and isothermal or adiabatic constant-volume decomposition. Physical processes in pseudostable ma-... [Pg.207]

Compatibility. Compatibility can be measured by any of three methods Taliani test, vacuum stability test, and differential thermal analysis. The propellant and the inert material being tested for compatibility are mixed together in some ratio which may vary from equal parts of propellant and test material to 10 parts propellant and 1 part inert material. In the vacuum stability test, increased reactivity is indicated by the mixture evolving more than five milliliters of gas over the sum of the amount of gas produced by the ingredients tested separately. In a differential thermal analysis. Increased reactivity is indicated by an upward displacement of the curve. In the Taliani test, increased gas production also indicates more reactivity. Increased reactivity is considered evidence of incompatibility. [Pg.64]
