Project early preparation

Conceptual estimates are typically prepared during the advanced R D and early process design stages. They are normally used to build the preliminary project economics, prepare preliminary execution plans, and develop cost estimates for the preparation of a complete process design (Phase 1) and a definitive cost estimate. The Phase 0 design package, described in Chapter 6, contains all the information required for conceptual estimates. See Table 9.1 for an example of a conceptual estimate. [Pg.110]

Regardless of the project execution approach, the Project Manager must sit with the contractor and/or the in-house specialists, early in the project, and prepare a sensible program for selective expediting and inspection. Another impetus to expansion of this field was the advent of World War 11 and the development of the atomic bomb. The desired isotope of uranium, in the form of UF was prepared by a gaseous diffusion separation process of the mixed isotopes (see Fluorine). UF is extremely reactive and required contact with inert organic materials as process seals and greases. The wartime Manhattan Project successfully developed a family of stable materials for UF service. These early materials later evolved into the current fluorochemical and fluoropolymer materials industry. Fluorine. Fluorine is the most reactive product of all electrochemical processes (63). It was first prepared in 1886, but important quantities of fluorine were not produced until the early 1940s. Fluorine was required for the production of uranium hexafluoride [7783-81 -5] UF, necessary for the enrichment of U (see DIFFUSION SEPARATION METHODS). The Manhattan Project in the United States and the Tube Alloy project in England contained parallel developments of electrolytic cells for fluorine production (63). Once the sizes of the major equipment items are known, there are several ways to get the cost of each. By far the most accurate is to get quotations from vendors. This is difficult to do in the early stages of a project because many equipment details are not known. Also, the time between making the preliminary study and purchasing the equipment is so long that the quotation ages, and vendors cannot afford to prepare quotations on every preliminary study. However, many vendors are very cooperative in providing verbal prices or " estimating quotations. Often, the vendor is the only source for accurate cost information. [Pg.232]

The mitochondrial complex that carries out ATP synthesis is called ATP synthase or sometimes FjFo-ATPase (for the reverse reaction it catalyzes). ATP synthase was observed in early electron micrographs of submitochondrial particles (prepared by sonication of inner membrane preparations) as round, 8.5-nm-diameter projections or particles on the inner membrane (Figure 21.23). In micrographs of native mitochondria, the projections appear on the matrixfacing surface of the inner membrane. Mild agitation removes the particles from isolated membrane preparations, and the isolated spherical particles catalyze ATP hydrolysis, the reverse reaction of the ATP synthase. Stripped of these particles, the membranes can still carry out electron transfer but cannot synthesize ATP. In one of the first reconstitution experiments with membrane proteins, Efraim Racker showed that adding the particles back to stripped membranes restored electron transfer-dependent ATP synthesis. [Pg.694]

When the Myco-protein project was planned in the 1960s it was assumed the product would form a valuable protein source, needed to meet expected protein shortages. By the early 1980s, when the project had reached production, the protein shortage had not developed (at least in Europe). However, dietary habits had changed, and there was a move away from meat consumption to other healthier foods. There was also a move towards convenience foods such as deep-frozen prepared meals. It was to these markets that Myco-protein was directed. [Pg.82]

The accuracy of an estimate depends on the amount of design detail available the accuracy of the cost data available and the time spent on preparing the estimate. Project-research proved to be an effective method of organizing research on chemical warfare during World War 1. It solved a problem encountered early in the United States preparation for chemical warfare, that of efficiently coordinating the work of volunteer chemists who were isolated in separate laboratories. Later in the war it was continued more because it enabled the examination of the chemical, pharmacological, and technical aspects of one problem to proceed simultaneously in several research units. Timetable for work plan. The work plan spans five years and involves eight related projects (Figure 3). Although these early findings showed that significant beneficial effects could be derived from mixes prepared with SEA binders, very little attention was maintained in this area until the mid-1970 s, or more directly, the advent of the Oil Embargo from the Middle East.
