Preliminary studies

With the aim of catalysis of the Diels-Alder reaction of 5.1 with 5.2 by metallo micelles, preliminary studies have been performed using the surfactants 5.5a-c and 5.6 (Scheme 5.2). Unfortunately, the limited solubility of these surfactants in the pH region that allows Lewis-acid catalysis of the Diels-... [Pg.138]

Asoc inol. Asocainol, a diben2azonine derivative, has sodium channel (Class I) and calcium channel (Class IV) blocking activity that accounts for the antiarrhythmic activity. Preliminary studies indicate that the compound is effective against ventricular arrhythmias (88). Additional studies are needed to estabUsh efficacy, toxicological potential, and pharmacokinetic profile. [Pg.122]

The most common approach to fixed cost estimation iavolves the use of a capital recovery factor to give the annual depreciation and return on capital. This factor typically is between 15 and 20% of the total capital investment. Property taxes are taken as 1—5% of the fixed capital and iasurance is assumed to be 1—2% of the fixed capital. If annual depreciation is estimated separately, it is assumed to be about 10% of the fixed capital investment. The annual iaterest expense is sometimes neglected as an expense ia preliminary studies. Some economists even beHeve that iaterest should be treated as a return on capital and not as part of the manufactufing expense. [Pg.445]

Contrac tors bids offer the most rehable information on cost. Order-of-magnitude costs, however, may be required for preliminary studies. One way of estimating them is to obtain cost information from similar facihties and scale it to the proposed installation. Costs of steel storage tanks and vessels have been found to vaiy approximately as the 0.6 to 0.7 power of their weight [see Happel, Chemical Process Economics, Wiley, 1958, p. 267 also Williams, Chem. Eng., 54(12), 124 (1947)]. AU estimates cased on the costs of existing eqiiipment must be corrected for changes in the price index from the date when the equipment was built. Considerable uncertainty is involved in adjusting data more than a few years old. [Pg.1020]

For preliminary studies of batch rectification of multicomponent mixtures, shortcut methods that assume constant molal overflow and negligible vapor and liquid holdup are useful. The method of Diwekar and Madhaven [Ind. Eng. Chem. Res., 30, 713 (1991)] can be used for constant reflux or constant overhead rate. The method of Sundaram and Evans [Ind. Eng. Chem. Res., 32, 511 (1993)] applies only to the case of constant remix, but is easy to apply. Both methods employ the Fenske-Uuderwood-GiUilaud (FUG) shortcut procedure at successive time steps. Thus, batch rectification is treated as a sequence of continuous, steady-state rectifications. [Pg.1338]

Figure 1.3.2 gives another perspective for scale-down to recycle reactor studies. In this actual case, after preliminary studies in a recycle reactor, a 5-stage adiabatic reactor was envisioned (Betty 1979.) Scaling down the proposed commercial reactor, a 3 diameter tube was designed with elaborate temperature compensation (heating and insulation) for pilot-plant studies (Betty 1968, 1969.) Small squares in the proposed reactor represent side views of cylindrical catalyst cutouts for the recycle reactor... [Pg.13]

Once the sizes of the major equipment items are known, there are several ways to get the cost of each. By far the most accurate is to get quotations from vendors. This is difficult to do in the early stages of a project because many equipment details are not known. Also, the time between making the preliminary study and purchasing the equipment is so long that the quotation ages, and vendors cannot afford to prepare quotations on every preliminary study. However, many vendors are very cooperative in providing verbal prices or " estimating quotations. Often, the vendor is the only source for accurate cost information. [Pg.232]

After the volume and price of the raw materials have been set, the freight estimate must be made. A call to the local rail, barge, or truck office by the traffic department or the engineer will get a price. Here again, the price tends to be conservative for preliminary studies since several months or years elapse before serious freight rates are negotiated. [Pg.237]

In summary, preliminary studies indicate that plasma spray coatings show great potential for improving the bondability of steel. Potential drawbacks include the requirement for relatively expensive plasma spray equipment and the necessity to keep the substfate temperature below that which would lead to undesirable metallurgical changes. [Pg.993]

Preliminary process capability studies are those based on measurements collected from one operating run to establish that the process is in statistical control and hence no special causes are present. Studies of unpredictable processes and the determination of associated capability indices have little value. Preliminary studies should show acceptable results for special characteristics before production approval can be given. These studies and associated indices only apply to the measurement of variables and not to attributes (see below). [Pg.368]

Molecular structural analysis is a developing method. The objective of a molecuhu structural analysis is to demonstrate a physical, structural, or chemical similarity between tlie chemical in question and a known toxic chemical tliat produces toxic and healtli effects in experimental animals and/or humans. Unfortunately, scientists do not fully understand tlie effects of slight changes in tlie chemical structure and tlieir biological effect on humans. As a result, tills type of analysis is useful in preliminary studies to identify potential health hazards for further e. amination with more established metliods in short-tenii tests or tests in experimental animals, hi its present stage of development, molecular structural analysis caiuiot be used to make absolute decisions about tlie appropriate levels of exposure of humans to chemicals... [Pg.302]

In the meantime, we believe that the best prediction of the toxicity of an ionic liquid of type [cation] [anion] can be derived from the often well known toxicity data for the salts [cation]Cl and Na[anion]. Since almost all chemistry in nature takes place in aqueous media, the ions of the ionic liquid can be assumed to be present in dissociated form. Therefore, a reliable prediction of ionic liquids HSE data should be possible from a combination of the loiown effects of the alkali metal and chloride salts. Already from these, very preliminary, studies, it is clear that HSE considerations will be an important criterion in selection and exclusion of specific ionic liquid candidates for future large-scale, technical applications. [Pg.30]

In view of the widespread use of welded joints in equipment and structures exposed to corrosion, it is necessary to know whether such welded joints will demonstrate satisfactory resistance to attack. It is not necessary to include welded specimens of all materials in a preliminary study to discover which of them have satisfactory resistance to a particular environment. Weld tests can be postponed until the preliminary selection has been made, or, alternatively, those materials expected in advance to be most likely to be resistant can be exposed in the welded condition so as to expedite the final answer. [Pg.982]
