When a battery produces current, the sites of current production are not uniformly distributed on the electrodes (45). The nonuniform current distribution lowers the expected performance from a battery system, and causes excessive heat evolution and low utilization of active materials. Two types of current distribution, primary and secondary, can be distinguished. The primary distribution is related to the current production based on the geometric surface area of the battery constmction. Secondary current distribution is related to current production sites inside the porous electrode itself. Most practical battery constmctions have nonuniform current distribution across the surface of the electrodes. This primary current distribution is governed by geometric factors such as height (or length) of the electrodes, the distance between the electrodes, the resistance of the anode and cathode stmctures by the resistance of the electrolyte and by the polarization resistance or hinderance of the electrode reaction processes. [Pg.514]

The destiny of most biological material produced in lakes is the permanent sediment. The question is how often its components can be re-used in new biomass formation before it becomes eventually buried in the deep sediments. Interestingly, much of the flux of phosphorus is held in iron(lll) hydroxide matrices and its re-use depends upon reduction of the metal to the iron(ll) form. The released phosphate is indeed biologically available to the organisms which make contact with it, so the significance attributed to solution events is understandable. The two major leafy crops used for the production of recombinant proteins are tobacco and alfalfa, both of which have high leaf biomass yields in part because they can be cropped several times every year. The main limitation of such crops is that the harvested leaves tend to have a restricted shelf life. The recombinant proteins exist in an aqueous environment and are therefore relatively unstable, which can reduce product yields [16]. For proteins that must be extracted and purified, the leaves need to be dried or frozen for transport, or processed immediately after harvest at the production site.
