In the mid Atlantic ocean observed concentrations at A03 and A04 decrease gradually with depth, whereas A05 concentrations show an increase until 500 m and a decrease below. Modeled profiles show a similar pattern. Surface concentrations of model results are much lower than the observed ones. In addition to this the fact that profiles of all mid Atlantic sampling location are identical can be explained by missing discharge into the mid Atlantic ocean in the emissions scenario. Emissions from American fluoropolymer productions sites are released into the Atlantic Ocean solely at the mouth of St. Lawrence River. Discharge of PFOA into for example the Gulf of Mexico is not considered.

Similar to other fluoropolymers and fluoroelasto-mers, such as PTFE, FEP, PFA, etc., low-level perfluorinated surfactants or chemicals, such as ammonium perfluoro-octanoate (APFO), etc. may be used in some fluoropolymer production as an emulsifier. These perfluorinated compounds are mostly extremely stable, degrade slowly, and therefore persist in the environment. These surfactants have varying ecotoxicity profiles, and users should contact their supplier for a more detailed ecotox information for their particular product.Industrial efforts are being made to reduce or even eliminate the use of such perfluorinated surfactants in their products and/or manufacturing processes.

The fact that elevated levels of PFC As have been detected in house dust in Japan, Canada and the United States strongly suggests the presence of indoor sources. It is well known that fluorotelomer and fluoropolymer products are sources of PFCAs and that PFCAs may exist in fluorotelomer products as unwanted by-products and in fluoropolymer products as residuals. Because a broad range of commercial products either contain or are treated with fluorotelomer and fluoropolymer products, they can be potential sources of PFCAs. Given that products are often used in close proximity to humans, it is hypothesized that they can contribute to human exposure to PFCAs either directly by dermal contact and hand-to-mouth transfer or indirectly through inhalation of suspended particles from treated carpet and other interior surfaces. 

A number of properties have to be measured to characterize and identify each fluoropolymer resin. The basic properties of fiuoropoiymers are characterized by standard test methods (Table 5.68) published by the American Society for Testing Materials (ASTM). Five major methods specify types and define properties of fluoropolymer products there is no standard specification method for polyvinyl fluoride (PVF).
