The case studies that follow have mainly come from live product development projects in industry. Whilst not all case studies require the methodology to predict an absolute capability, a common way of applying CA is by evaluating and comparing a number of design schemes and selecting the one with the most acceptable performance measure, either estimated Cp, assembly risk or failure cost. In some cases, commercial confidence precludes the inclusion of detailed drawings of the components used in the analyses. CA has been used in industry in a number of different ways. From the management point of view, it is important to outline all the steps and devise various contingency plans for the entire product development project. The Virtual Design Team (VDT) is an actor-oriented model for the simulation of product development projects that was created at Stanford University. Early versions of VDT were already able to model actors and activities as well as the information flow between them [599, 604]. New theories or frameworks need to be developed to identify patterns within or between industry sectors and product development project types. Several attempts have been made in the past, while new challenges have also emerged. In this chapter CE has been described as an innovation system aimed at generating a production system that is capable to sustainably produce the new product envisioned. The production system is often also a complex system of collaborating companies, for example in a supply chain. Based on this view a framework has been proposed that can be used to describe CE processes and its resulting production system for farther analysis. Examples of innovation in the food industry have been presented, which show that several innovation systems may co-exist and interact. In addition, specific properties of food production systems, in particular integration and coordination, have been presented that need to be taken into account when developing a production system. 

Our efforts to better represent the sociotechnical characteristics of product development projects began in 1995 at the University of Tokyo [1].
