The air is then discharged through the rear plenum into the space benvcen the supply and exhaust filters hicated at the top of the cabinet. To avoid the problems with vacuum cleaner surface dust sampling a special surface dust sampler, HVS-3, was developed (Roberts et al, 1991). The sampler consists of a nozzle that can be adjusted to a well defined distance to the surface, a cyclone that collects the dust particles, an air pump, and an exhaust filter to capture particles that are not retained in the cyclone. SVOCs may break through the cyclone as vapors and a PUF plug can be inserted after the cyclone. HVS-3 has been modified to ensure a more constant suction pressure and volume, and a known sampled area (Gyntelberg et al, 1994). The design and use of the HSV3 has now been standardized (ASTM, 1997, D 5438-94). [Pg.28]

Before the americium can be precipitated as the oxalate, the acidity of the solution must be lowered. This cannot be done by the addition of NaOH or KOH as these cations are carried down with the americium oxalate. The acidity adjustment can be made with NH40H with no product contamination, but processing problems resulting from ammonia vapors mixing with nitric acid fumes have to be avoided. Even with the use of efficient traps, some ammonia vapors escape to form solid ammonium nitrate which plugs glovebox exhaust filters plus, ammonium nitrate also slowly sublimes through the entire exhaust system. [Pg.86]

Exhaust filters should be monitored regularly to prevent excessive filter loading that could force dust particles through the filter media, or could cause the filters to burst, resulting in contamination of the ambient air. [Pg.72]

With carbon adsorption, solvent vapors escaping from a degreaser are captured by a lip exhaust, filtered and blown through a bed of activated carbon pellets, granules or fibers. The carbon traps the solvent but allows the air to pass through. The solvent is recovered by steaming the bed and condensing the solvent and steam. Obviously, solvent vapors that are not collected by the exhaust cannot be recovered. Automated systems are common, but manually operated units are available. [Pg.45]

For granulation work where the objective is to agglomerate particles to form granules, the lower particle size limit may be limited by the screens or filters that confine the particles in the process. If the plate screen does not adequately contain preagglomerated particles, they can be lost from the process. It is also possible for small particles to blind or pass through exhaust filters at the start of a granulation process prior to their incorporation into a granule. [Pg.140]
