Product introductions

The food producing industry has responded to consumer demand for foods with lower fat content (Table 1). Foods with low or no cholesterol claims leaped 78% from 1980 to 1990, in spite of the fact that many of the principal food producers reduced the amount of new product introductions during 1989 and 1990 (7). Table 2 indicates the change in the market for various food industry segments, especially those suspected as fat problem generators, including dairy and meat foods. Many low fat and low cholesterol foods were created by a dding claims to food that have always been low in fat and/or cholesterol. 

New product introductions are generally heavily supported by the technical service function. Many customers using chemical feedstocks to produce multicomponent products for the consumer market require extensive on-line evaluations of new raw materials prior to their acceptance for use. An example of this would be the use of a new engineering polymer for the fabrication of exterior automobile stmctural panels. Full-scale fabrication of the part foUowed by a detailed study of parameters, such as impact strength, colorant behavior, paint receptivity, exterior photodurabiHty, mar resistance, and others, would be required prior to making a raw materials change of this nature. 

The most frequendy used technique to shift the equiUbrium toward peptide synthesis is based on differences in solubiUty of starting materials and products. Introduction of suitable apolar protective groups or increase of ionic strength decreases the product solubiUty to an extent that often allows neady quantitative conversions. Another solubiUty-controUed technique is based on introduction of a water-immiscible solvent to give a two-phase system. Products preferentially partition away from the reaction medium thereby shifting the equiUbrium toward peptide synthesis.

Marketers are finding a positive role for anti-microbial compounds in areas which have not been seen before. Recent product introductions accompanied by major promotions by Savlon for First Aid-Hand Hygiene Liquid Gel with claims such as kills 99.99% of germs in 15 seconds . The main actives are ethanol, Triclosan and propylene glycol. Another major promotion from Dettol on Anti-septic properties is currently on our television screens, creating a positive image for use of these ingredients, which could only help this industry.

N9 is currently the only approved spermicide in the U.S., and formulators must take this into strategic account. However, in the design of new polymer vehicles, the use of an approved spermicide is a logical choice for product introduction. However, compatibility of such excipients is an important consideration in the formulation of new chemical spermicides. 

The reaction of Scheme 4.10 yields only products of ortho and para substitutions the meta isomer is lacking. If it were a standard radical substitution, the meta-isomer would obviously be formed in a certain amount (i.e., in the same amount as that for ortho-substituted product). Introduction of electron-acceptor substituents enhances stability of the substrate to oxidation and prevents electron transfer to benzoyloxy radical. As a result, phenylation takes place instead of benzoyloxylation, and the phenyl radical enters into any free position. 

The certification activities include a series of process documentation and qualification studies that start with the initial installation of a sterilization system and continue as process engineering changes or new or revised product introductions are required. Qualification activities comprise installation, operational, change, and performance phases.

Usually large production batch scale-up is undertaken only after product introduction. Again, the actual size of the pilot-production (100 x ) batch may vary due to equipment and raw material availability. The need for additional pilot-production batches ultimately depends on the successful completion of a first pilot batch and its process validation program. Usually three successfully completed pilot-production batches are required for validation purposes. 

Active pharmaceutical ingredients are most often manufactured in batch or semicontinuous process since most APIs are potent and normally used in relatively small amounts in each batch of drug product, especially during the early phase of drug product introduction. With the advent of many new APIs, the capital investment for continuous operation is not economically feasible. In a batch process, the product is often made from a well-identified, approved raw material supply, which is usually present at the start of the reaction. 

The site must develop a documented system for determining what hazard data is necessary, obtain such data, evaluate and analyze the data for process safety issues and incorporate the information into the new product introduction and/or process hazard analysis program.

The team must also do a complete value chain analysis showing the suppliers, distributors, customers, end-users of the product, and where the organization will position itself in the industry. Furthermore, our position relative to competitive products must be established and analyzed. The team must also establish a basis of pricing the product, as well as the price itself The market plan should also include when the product introduction will occur, if there are plans to commercialize with a partner, what the sales force requirements will be, and a distribution plan for the product.
