Private specialties

Saks Fifth Avenue, the department store, requested a private-label bar condiment program for its houseware boutiques last year, which included martini olives, maraschino cherries and gibson onions.The items were provided by Fodda, a New York specialty food company. Keith Bacon, its president, was previously in die fashion business, at Alfred Dunhill. 

Mail order companies often offer excellent service. Their catalogs sometimes list specialty items not sold elsewhere, such as unique pH electrodes or plastic products. Both laboratory supply houses and mail order companies may sell popular types of instruments under their own private labels at substantial savings. 

Within the chemical universe, the fine-chemical industry is positioned between the commodity and specialty chemical industries. They are their suppliers and customers, respectively. Among the latter, the life sciences, especially the pharmaceutical industry, prevail (see Section 9.2). A large variety of enterprises, laboratories, and institutes in both the private and public sectors are providing contract research and manufacturing services along the drug supply chain (see Figure 2.1). 

In the future, medium-sized players in particular could be consolidation targets. They often suffer from cost disadvantages compared to mega-players, and lack the dedicated niche players strong position. Private equity firms in particular have developed a taste for the role of industry shapers. They accounted for more than 20 percent of all deals between 2000 and 2004, and over time they have built quite sizeable specialty players such as Rockwood Specialties and Hexion Specialty Chemicals, which combines Borden Chemicals, Resolution Performance Products, and other businesses.

Velsicol Chemical LLC, formerly Velsicol Chemical Corporation, designs, manufactures, markets and distributes high performance specialty chemicals and industrial intermediates, primarily based on benzoic acid and the organic compound cyclopentadiene. Its products include chlorendic anhydride and hexachlorocyclopentadiene (HEX). Chlorendic anhydride is corrosion resistant, fire resistant and has high UV stability, and is used in the synthesis of flame retardant polymers such as polyurethanes, unsaturated polyester and epoxy resins. HEX, a reactive intermediate used in the manufacture of agricultural pesticides in the production of flame retardants for the wire and cable industry and in the preparation of chlorendic anhydride. The company s products are produced primarily at a plant in Memphis, Tennessee Velsicol also maintains the Memphis Environmental Center (MEC), which focuses on managing legacy environmental liabilities. The firm is owned by Arsenal Capital Partners, a private equity firm. 

Most physicians today are on a professional treadmill. Their employer requires a certain number of patients to be seen per day, regardless of the nature of the patients needs. Even if the physician is in private practice, it takes a certain (often large) number of patients per day just to pay the overhead. On average and by specialty, the lowest paid physicians in the United States are pediatricians, psychiatrists, and family physicians, so there is little room to maneuver more time per patient. Because a patient is probably happy with the pace and generous time allotment for therapy sessions, it is important to prepare him or her for the often chaotic pace of medicine.

One example is that of a private physician s office. Studies have been performed to determine the impact of having a pharmacist providing pharmaceutical care in a physician s office.In this scenario, pharmacists usually have unlimited access to patient information and may have their own office or exam room to evaluate and educate patients. The pharmacist may see these patients independently of the physician or evaluate the patient for pharmaceutical issues before the physician sees them. Other services may be available at these offices such as a laboratory or radiological services, depending on size and specialty of the office. 

Since the 1980s, the specialty area of infectious diseases within pharmacy practice has evolved into a distinct discipline that is directed at providing optimum antimicrobial therapy to patients. The pharmacist is uniquely qualified to apply therapeutic, pharmacokinetic, and pharmacodynamic principles to antimicrobial therapy. These skills serve to complement rather than compete with the roles of infectious diseases physicians. Infectious diseases pharmacists are employed in private and teaching hospitals, clinics, academia, and industry. Literature that document the positive impact of the infectious diseases pharmacist on patient outcomes is now being published. 

There is considerable confusion in pharmacy concerning current definitions of practice sites and practice philosophies. Ambulatory care includes all health-related services in which patients walk to seek their care. " These services may be provided in emergency rooms, urgent centers, private offices, primary care clinics, specialty and subspecialty clinics, and community pharmacies.

Laboratory (4) and Process Development Unit (5,6) studies originally conducted at the Universite de Sherbrooke, and now conducted jointly with the private industry at Universite Laval, province of Quebec, have led to the conclusion that thermal decomposition under reduced pressure is an attractive approach for the conversion of biomass into chemicals and fuels products. The process uses a multiple-hearth furnace for wood pyrolysis. This approach is characterized by a low pressure and a short residence time of the vapor products in the rciactor. When compared with conventional, atmospheric pressure carbonization, vacuum pyrolysis has the potential to significantly enhance the yields of organic liquid products with respect to solid and gaseous products. The pyrolysis oils (biooils) obtained from this process can be deoxygenated into transportation fuels upon further upgrading (7). Specialty as well as commodity (Pakdel, H. Roy, C. Biomass, in press) chemicals can also be extracted from the pyrolysis oil product. 

Dr. Donald James Batten is a creationist agricultural scientist from Australia. He received a Ph.D degree from the University of Sydney, Department of Agronomy and Horticultural Science. His specialty is in plant physiology.
