Industry Interest. One of Canada s leading solar and biomass conversion equipment companies, Petro-Sun International Inc. became interested in scaling up the Universite Laval/universite de Sherbrooke vacuum pyrolysis process on a cost-shared basis. Special Note. As of January 1988, Petro-Sun International Inc. was forced into receivership for reasons unrelated to their activities in biomass pyrolysis. The Universite Laval is seeking alternative industrial partners. Another company, Ensyn Engineering Ltd., was established, and proposed a cost-shared, scaled-up development of the University of Western Ontario ultrapyrolysis. Similarly, there has been a number of industrial expressions of interest in the University of Waterloo flash pyrolysis. [Pg.10]

It is reported that between 10 and 11 million cars are taken apart every year in North America once the metallic portion has been recovered from the crushing operation, the remainder - representing over 20% of the total mass or 3.5 million tons - must be eliminated. Pyrovac, in collaboration with Universite Laval and under the sponsorship of E.T.P. Technologies, recently undertook a research programme to recover valuable products from this Automobile Shredder Residue. A process flow sheet for a 4000 kg/hr plant is presented, with fixed capital investment estimated to be 5 million US dollars. Details are given. [Pg.109]

Jonathan L. Huot earned a B.Sc. in microbiology from Universite Laval in Quebec City, Canada, in 2005. He is currendy a doctoral fellow of the Ponds quebecois de la recherche sur la nature et les technologies working with Professor Jacques Lapointe at Universite Laval, where he is investigating the pathways catalyzed in bacteria by the aminoacyl-tRNA amidotransferase (GatCAB) and its substrate-forming enzymes, the nondiscriminating aminoacyl-tRNA synthetases. [Pg.429]

Robert Chenevert is Professor of Organic Chemistry at Universite Laval, Quebec, Canada. He studied chemistry (B.Sc. and M.Sc.) at the Universite de Montreal. After receiving his Ph.D. in organic chemistry in 1975 at the Universite de Sherbrooke under the supervision of Professor Pierre Deslongchamps, he spent a postdoctoral year at Harvard (R. B. Woodward s group). His main research interest is the application of biocatalysts in asymmetric synthesis. He is also interested in the design of inhibitors of enzymes involved in the aminoacylation of tRNA (aminoacyl-tRNA synthetases and aminoacyl-tRNA amidotransferases). [Pg.430]

Polished thin sections or iron oxides grains polished in epoxy mounts were analyzed using Universite Laval CAMECA SX-100 5-VVDS electron microprobe under a beam of 15 kV at 100 nA, using a range of natural and synthetic standards. After counting over the peak for 20 to 30 sec, background is measured on both sides for 10 sec. These settings yield minimum detection limits (mdl) as low as 20 ppm for elements such as K, Ca, Al, Si, Ti and Mg, 50 ppm for Mn, Cr and V, 200 ppm for Cu,... [Pg.7]

The ferromagnetic fraction of the till samples was separated by standard methods by Overburden Drilling Management Ltd (ODM). Subsamples containing 22 to 110 randomly selected grains were prepared by ODM. To test for heterogeneity, two sets of 5 subsamples, from 2 till samples, were prepared from the 0.5-1.0 mm size fraction using a plastic riffle at Universite Laval. [Pg.8]

As barrier methods of protection are extremely effective at reducing the spread of STDs, researchers have been examining the possibility of new barrier products that women can use and thereby take control. To date the female condom has proved to be unpopular and has been described as both noisy and uncomfortable [121]. An alternative female condom is under development at the Universite Laval in Quebec, Canada, where researchers are currently in the process of developing a physical barrier in the form of an invisible condom. The invisible condom is a thermoreversible gel that hardens when inserted into the vagina or the rectum due to the increased temperature of the human body. The gel, which breaks down several hours after application, has been shown in laboratory studies to provide sufficient protection against herpes simplex virus (HSV) and HIV. Although the invisible condom will provide women with the autonomy to protect themselves, and it has the major disadvantage that is unlikely to go unnoticed by the user s partner. [Pg.419]
