Television advertising is currently widespread and will increasingly be regulated. But it will continue to be a prime source of information for patients and an excellent stimulus for patient-physician discussions. While physicians will have to learn to resist patient demands when specific therapies are not needed, increased information is inevitable and probably very useful. 

The therapist can help the family and caregivers find snch essential and concise how-to snrvival gnides as this special report (Kahn et ah, 1998) and many other resonrces available throngh the Internet. One very helpful website, www.alzheimers.org, is that of the ADEAR (Alzheimer s Disease Education and Referral) Center, a service of the National Institute on Aging of the National Institutes of Health in the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. The website of the Alzheimer s Disease and Related Disorders Association, Inc., www.alz.org, also provides resources and information for patients, families, and caregivers. 

Non-promotional information for patients and the general public Subject to any applicable national laws and regulations, websites may include non-promotional information for patients and the general public on products distributed by the company (including information on their indications, side effects, interactions with other medicines, proper use, reports of clinical research, etc.), provided that such information is balanced, accurate and consistent with the approved summary of product characteristics (SPC). For each product that is discussed, the website must contain full, unedited copies of the current SPC and patient leaflet. These documents should be posted in conjunction with other information about the products or be connected with that discussion by a prominent link advising the reader to consult them. In addition, the website may provide a link to the full, unedited copy of any public assessment report issued by the Committee for Medicinal Products for Human Use or a relevant national competent authority. Brand names should be accompanied by recommended international non-proprietary names (rINNs). 

The role to be played by hospital pharmacists should be determined by all health care professionals, not just by pharmacists themselves. The 1999 meeting of the Spanish Society of Hospital Pharmacists took this into account and a roundtable was held incorporating representatives of all health team members as well as a representative of patient opinion based on a survey of patients. Better information for patients, more integration of pharmacists in the health team, and more direct contact with patients seem to be the activities to be developed in the future. 

Table 4 outlines various transplant web resources that a pharmacist specializing in transplantation may find useful. Although some of these web sites include information for patients, others are for health care providers working with the transplant recipients.

The use of nuclear perfusion imaging in addition to exercise stress testing or as an alternative modality for patients unable to exercise (using pharmacologic agents) can provide important prognostic information for patients with chronic ischemic heart disease.

Information for Patients The action of albuterol tablets may last up to 8 hours or longer. Albuterol tablets should not be taken more frequently than recommended. Do not increase the dose or frequency of albuterol tablets without consulting your physician. If you find that treatment with albuterol tablets becomes less effective for symptomatic relief, your symptoms get worse, and/or you need to take the product more frequently than usual, you should seek medical attention immediately. While you are taking albuterol tablets, other asthma medications and inhaled drugs should be taken only as directed by your physician. Common adverse effects include palpitations, chest pain, rapid heart rate, and tremor or nervousness. If you are pregnant or nursing, contact your physician about use of albuterol tablets. Effective and safe use of albuterol tablets includes an understanding of the way that it should be administered.
