False. The sale of fireworks is controlled in most countries, with an age limit often being applied. In the UK and in the USA it is illegal to sell fireworks to anyone under the age of 18. In 2004, in the UK, 1136 people were injured in firework accidents with 515 of them needing hospital treatment. More than half of these casualties were young people under the age of 18. In 2004, in the USA, 9600 people were treated for firework injuries in hospital emergency rooms. [Pg.21]

One eritical factor that has been neglected in considering mechanisms of cardiac fatalities is the timeframe for various types of toxicities. For example, a majority of cocaine-related fatalities and near fatalities reported from emergency rooms are attributed to one or more types of cardiac ischemic or hypertensive episodes (Isner et al. 1986). Thus, these studies may discount the cocaine-induced arrhythmias and conduction defects as important direct causes of fatalities. Yet, if coroner reports are used as data sources (Virmani et al. 1988 Wetli and Wright 1979 Mittleman and Wetli 1984), there are great numbers of deaths in which pulmonary effusion and lack of evidence for coronary occlusion, acute myocardial infarction, or... [Pg.328]

The PCP abuser poses unique problems for law enforcement agencies and the judicial system. McCarron et al. (1981), in reviewing medical and behavioral characteristics of 1,000 PCP episodes observed in medical emergency rooms, have noted the extremely high incidence (35 percent) of violence and rage reactions. Possibly... [Pg.220]

All inpatients admitted through the hospital emergency room over a 15-month period (June 1982 through August 1983) had urine samples collected in the emergency room for later PCP assay. This represented 1,550 admissions of 1,384 individual patients, but did not include all hospital inpatients (1.e., excluded those who were admitted from outpatient status). PCP was detected in the urine of 16.5 percent (255) of the total admissions and 15.5 percent (215) of individual patients. In the vast majority of cases, the PCP levels were low (less than 30 ng/ml in 85.0 percent). [Pg.233]

In Los Angeles County, the number of PCP abusers seen in emergency rooms rose from 1,567 in 1980 to 3,001 in 1983, an increase of 92 percent. In addition, approximately 30 percent of these individuals were women of child-bearing age, who reported that their first use of PCP was at the age of 20 years (Husson 1984). [Pg.250]

DW, a 78-year-old Caucasian man, presents to the emergency room with complaints of a headache persisting over the last 3 days. Repeated blood pressure measurements average 200/11 0 mm Hg. He reports no other symptoms and physical examination and laboratory tests are unremarkable as is his past medical history with the exception of hypertension diagnosed in his early 60s. DW reports that he is struggling on a fixed retirement income with no prescription coverage and takes "what I can afford." Blood pressure medications are carvedilol 25 mg twice daily, amlodipine 10 mg once daily, torsemide (Demadex )... [Pg.29]

The patient returns for a follow-up visit at your clinic 6 weeks later. He reports no pain or swelling in the joints affected previously. The emergency room doctor had instructed him to stop the chlorthalidone, so he is currently taking only pantoprazole. [Pg.896]

A 72-year-old man with a history of congestive heart failure, diabetes, hypertension, and hyperlipidemia presents to the local emergency room with complaints of increasing shortness of breath, cough productive of yellow-green sputum, chest pain, fever, and malaise. He was hospitalized 12 days ago for urosepsis, for which he received 1 0 days of levofloxacin. [Pg.1022]

A 56-year-old man presents to the emergency room with complaints of right lower leg pain and redness. Examining his leg, you notice that he has erythema and edema extending from his ankle to proximal tibia. The area feels warm. On questioning, the patient states that the redness started approximately 2 days ago. He has felt feverish over the previous 48 hours but did not check his temperature. He has had no other symptoms. He states that he bumped his shin on the bed frame last week and sustained a bruise but no apparent breaks in the skin. His vital signs at the clinic reveal a temperature of 38.3°C, pulse 102 beats per minute, blood pressure 11 0/72 mm Hg, and respiratory rate 20 breaths per minute. The physician diagnoses this patient with cellulitis. [Pg.1080]

A 56-year-old man with a history of diabetes and coronary artery disease presents to the emergency room with complaints of weakness, fever, and chills. On interviewing the patient, you determine that he went to the dentist about 3 weeks ago and since that time has lost about 5 lb. The patient reports that the symptoms began about 1 to 2 weeks ago. He denies any use of alcohol or illicit drugs but admits to smoking about V2 pack of cigarettes per day. [Pg.1090]

His physical examination is positive for fever and diffuse abdominal pain. An abdominal ultrasound did not show any abnormal findings. Two sets of blood cultures were sent. He was admitted to the hospital. [Pg.1127]

In a particularly dramatic case of placebo-induced side effects, doctors at a hospital in Jackson, Mississippi, treated a young man who came into the emergency room, said to the receptionist, Help me, I took all my pills and then collapsed to the floor, dropping an empty prescription container. His blood pressure was abnormally low, and he was treated with intravenous fluids, which brought it back to within a normal range. The prescription bottle bore a label indicating that the medication was part of a clinical trial of antidepressants. Further investigation revealed that he had... [Pg.127]
