POWER STEERING

Viscosity improvers are primarily used in multigrade automotive engine oils, automatic transmission oils, power steering fluids, and gear oils. They also find use in aircraft and some industrial hydrauHc fluids for low temperature use. 

DuPont—Dow is the primary suppHer of these polymers. There is an estimated 18,000 t of these elastomers used per year. The main uses of CPE are in constmction, automotive, and electrical appHcations. These include power steering hose, electrical cords used in low voltage appHcations (extension cords, ignition wire), pond liners, and as a plastic modifier to improve impact modification. 

CSM is extensively used in constmction and electrical appHcations. This includes roofing membranes, automotive ignition boots and wire, toU compounds, and in some automotive hoses requiring good heat and oil resistance, eg, air conditioning and power steering. It is also used in nuclear power plants because of its exceUent resistance to radiation degradation.

The power developed on the crankshaft is further depreciated by the requirements of such accessories as the electric alternator, power steering pump, and air conditioner. The drivetrain that connects the crankshaft output to the vehicle drive wheels causes a further loss in power. Drivetrain efficiency generally falls within 80 to 95 percent. The remaining useful propulsive power varies with speed. 

Today belts are used in automobiles to drive aux-iliaiy devices such as air conditioning, power brakes, power steering, the alternator, and the cooling fluid pump. Belts also can be found in household appliances such as vacuum sweepers, on lathes in machine shops, or inside copying machines.

Hydraulic fluids are a very large class of materials that are used in machines and equipment to transfer pressure from one point to another. They are used in many ways including all fluids for car automatic transmissions, brakes, and power steering. Hydraulic fluids are also used in many machines like tractors and other farm equipment, forklift trucks, bulldozers, and other construction equipment, and airplanes. No information concerning the specific production volumes of mineral oil hydraulic fluids was found in the available literature. The National Petroleum Refiners Association (NPRA 1992) reported that 192 million gallons of automatic transmission fluids, universal tractor hydraulic/transmission fluids, energy/ shock absorber and power steering fluids, and other automotive hydraulic fluids were sold in 1991. Another common example of an incomplete scope occurs when a person buys a car. The list price of a car may be around 3,000, but rarely does anyone pay under 3,500, and the price may reach 4,500. A more influential market driver is the growth of electric and electronic systems on vehicles. The demands come not only from a variety of comfort, convenience, communications, and entertainment features, but also from an evolution to electromechanical operation for many auxiliary devices that to date have been purely mechanical, such as power steering, valve train actuation, braking, suspensions, and air conditioning, among others. Moreover, power train electrification enables new levels of driver responsiveness and controllability in addition to fuel economy benefits.
