Compositional analysis of polymeric rubber products by TGA has been used for many years to determine the quality and content of various rubber products (Kau 1988 Sircar 1997). A polystyrene butadiene rubber composition is illustrated in Fig. 3.20. The protocol for this analysis includes the following heating rate 20°C/min, 30 mg sample mass, and switching the purge gas from nitrogen to air at 500 °C. The results are illuminating for a 30-min determination of composition 8.4 mass% oil, which evaporates prior to the onset of polymer decomposition just below 400°C 50.4 mass% polymer, whose decomposition is complete by 500 °C, at which point the purge gas is switched to air 36.2 mass% carbon black, taken as the mass loss in air and 5.0 mass% residue, either ash or mineral filler plus ash. [Pg.276]

Styrene is manufactured by alkylating benzene with ethene followed by dehydrogenation, or from petroleum reformate coproduction with propylene oxide. Styrene is used almost exclusively for the manufacture of polymers, of which the most important are polystyrene, ABS plastics and styrene-butadiene rubber. Many of the most floppy polymers have half-melted in this way at room temperature. The temperature at which this happens is called the glass temperature, Tq, for the polymer. Some polymers, which have no cross-links, melt completely at temperatures above T, becoming viscous liquids. Others, containing cross-links, become leathery (like PVC) or rubbery (as polystyrene butadiene does). Some typical values for Tg are polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA, or perspex), 100°C polystyrene (PS), 90°C polyethylene (low-density form), -20°C natural rubber, -40°C. To summarise, above Tc. the polymer is leathery, rubbery or molten below, it is a true solid with a modulus of at least 2GNm . This behaviour is shown in Fig. 6.2 which also shows how the stiffness of polymers increases as the covalent cross-link density increases, towards the value for diamond (which is simply a polymer with 100% of its bonds cross-linked. Fig. 4.7). Stiff polymers, then, are possible the stiffest now available have moduli comparable with that of aluminium. [Pg.62]

In a block copolymer, a long segment made from one monomer is followed by a segment formed from the other monomer. One example is the block copolymer formed from styrene and butadiene. Pure polystyrene is a transparent, brittle material that is easily broken polybutadiene is a synthetic rubber that is very resilient, but soft and opaque. A block copolymer of the two monomers produces high-impact polystyrene, a material that is a durable, strong, yet transparent plastic. Uses. Plastics and synthetic rubber are the major uses for styrene. They account for the exponential growth from a few million pounds per year in 1938 to more than 8 billion pounds today. Most polystyrene products are not homopolystyrene since the latter is relatively brittle with low impact and solvent resistance (Secs. 3-14b, 6-la). Various combinations of copolymerization and blending are used to improve the properties of polystyrene [Moore, 1989]. Copolymerization of styrene with 1,3-butadiene imparts sufficient flexibility to yield elastomeric products [styrene-1,3-butadiene rubbers (SBR)]. Most SBR rubbers (trade names Buna, GR-S, Philprene) are about 25% styrene-75% 1,3-butadiene copolymer produced by emulsion polymerization some are produced by anionic polymerization. About 2 billion pounds per year are produced in the United States. SBR is similar to natural rubber in tensile strength, has somewhat better ozone resistance and weatherability but has poorer resilience and greater heat buildup. SBR can be blended with oil (referred to as oil-extended SBR) to lower raw material costs without excessive loss of physical properties. SBR is also blended with other polymers to combine properties. The major use for SBR is in tires. Other uses include belting, hose, molded and extruded goods, flooring, shoe soles, coated fabrics, and electrical insulation. [Pg.529]

Another widely used copolymer is high impact polystyrene (PS-HI), which is formed by grafting polystyrene to polybutadiene. Again, if styrene and butadiene are randomly copolymerized, the resulting material is an elastomer called styrene-butadiene-rubber (SBR). Another classic example of copolymerization is the terpolymer acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene (ABS). Polymer blends belong to another family of polymeric materials which are made by mixing or blending two or more polymers to enhance the physical properties of each individual component. The potential problem of styrene taint in foods is well known and documented in the literature (Saxby 1996). Styrene (see Chapter 2) is the monomer that is polymerized to make polystyrene (PS) (also known as general purpose or GPPS grade). These substances, called impact modifiers, increase the toughness of the brittle polymer substantially.
