To a far less degree, some studies have been performed using a polymer and a surfactant with the same charge. Relatively few have been done using an imcharged polymer-nonionic surfactant interactions, as they are generally weak. Solvents. The most widely used solvent is deionized water primarily because it is cheap and readily available. Other solvents include ethanol, propjdene glycol or butylene glycol, sorbitol, and ethoxylated nonionic surfactants. There is a trend in styling products toward alcohol-free formulas. Many different types of foaming agents are used, but nonionic surfactants are the most common, eg, ethoxylated fatty alcohols, fatty acid alkanolamides, fatty amine oxides, nonylphenol ethoxylates, and octylphenol ethoxylates, to name a few (see Alkylphenols). Three generations of latices as characterized by the type of surfactant used in manufacture have been defined (53). The stabilizing abiUty of anionic fatty acid soaps diminishes at lower pH as the soaps revert to their acids. First-generation latices also suffer from the presence of soap on the polymer particles at the end of the polymerization. Steam and vacuum stripping methods are often used to remove the soap and unreacted monomer from the final product (56). [Pg.25]

Low molecular cationic polymers or alum can also be used to flocculate pitch, ie, bind up the pitch so that it is retained in the sheet, to minimize pitch deposition on machine surfaces and fabrics (35,36). The production of alkylphenols exceeds 450,000 t/yr on a worldwide basis. Alkylphenols of greatest commercial importance have alkyl groups ranging in size from one to twelve carbons. The direct use of alkylphenols is limited to a few minor appUcations such as epoxy-curing catalysts and biocides. The vast majority of alkylphenols are used to synthesize derivatives which have appUcations ranging from surfactants to pharmaceuticals. Nonionic surfactants and phenoUc resins based on alkylphenols are mature markets and only moderate growth in these derivatives is expected. Concerns over the biodegradabiUty and toxicity of these alkylphenol derivatives to aquatic species may limit their use in the future. The most commonly used emulsifiers are sodium, potassium, or ammonium salts of oleic acid, stearic acid, or rosin acids, or disproportionate rosin acids, either singly or in mixture. An aLkylsulfate or aLkylarenesulfonate can also be used or be present as a stabilizer. A useful stabilizer of this class is the condensation product of formaldehyde with the sodium salt of P-naphthalenesulfonic acid. A sol-type latex is preferred to ensure good adhesion to concrete decks. A crystalline polymer latex is preferred where added durabUity is needed. Internal surfactants, i.e., surfactants that are incorporated into the backbone of the polymer, are commonly used in PUD s. These surfactants can be augmented by external surfactants, especially anionic and nonionic surfactants, which are commonly used in emulsion polymerization. Great attention should be paid to the amount and type of surfactant used to stabilize urethane dispersions. Internal or external surfactants for one-component PUD s are usually added at the minimum levels needed to get good stability of the dispersion. Additional amounts beyond this minimum can cause problems with the end use of the PUD adhesive. At best, additional surfactant can cause moisture sensitivity problems with the PUD adhesive, due to the hydrophilic nature of the surfactant. Structured laundry liquids are currently available in Europe and were recently introduced in the United States [50,51]. These products typically contain high levels of surfactants and builder salts, as well as enzymes and other additives. Under the microscope (electron microscope, freeze fracturing) these appear as round droplets with an onion-like, multilayered structure. These esters of p-hydroxybenzoic acid have been used primarily to prevent growth of molds but in higher concentrations possess some weak antibacterial activity. Their effective use is limited by low aqueous solubility and by reports of stinging and burning sensations related to their use in the eye. They bind to a number of nonionic surfactants and polymers, thereby reducing their bioactivity. They are used in combination, with the methyl ester at 0.03-0.1% and the propyl ester at 0.01-0.02%. Surfactants. The use of surfactants is greatly restricted in formulating ophthalmic solutions. The order of surfactant toxicity is anionic > cationic >> nonionic. Several nonionic surfactants are used in relatively low concentrations to aid in dispersing steroids in suspensions and to achieve or to improve solution clarity.
