Polyester Resins. Reinforced polyester resins are thermosets based on unsaturated polyesters from glycols and dibasic acids, either or both of which contain reactive double bonds. The ratio of saturated to unsaturated components controls the degree of cross-linking and thus the rigidity of the product (see Polyesters, unsaturated). Typically, the glycols and acids are esterified until a viscous Hquid results, to which an inhibitor is added to prevent premature gelation. Addition of the monomer, usually styrene, reduces the viscosity to an easily workable level. [Pg.328]

Composite In polymer technology a combination of a polymeric matrix and a reinforcing fiber with properties that the component materials do not have. The most common matrix resins are unsaturated thermosetting polyesters and epoxies, and reinforcing fibers are glass, carbon, and aramid fibers. The reinforcing fibers may be continuous or discontinuous. Some matrix resins are thermoplastics. [Pg.252]

Thermoset plastics have also been pyrolysed with a view to obtain chemicals for recycling into the petrochemical industry. Pyrolysis of a polyester/styrene copolymer resin composite produced a wax which consisted of 96 wt% of phthalic anhydride and an oil composed of 26 wt% styrene. The phthalic anhydride is used as a modifying agent in polyester resin manufacture and can also be used as a cross-linking agent for epoxy resins. Phthalic anhydride is a characteristic early degradation product of unsaturated thermoset polyesters derived from orf/io-phthalic acid [56, 57]. Kaminsky et al. [9] investigated the pyrolysis of polyester at 768°C in a fiuidized-bed reactor and reported 18.1 wt% conversion to benzene. [Pg.309]

All TP or TS matrix property can be improved or changed to meet varying requirements by using reinforcements. Typical thermoplastics used include TP polyesters, polyethylenes (PEs), nylons (polyamides/ PAs), polycarbonates (PCs), TP polyurethanes (PURs), acrylics (PMMAs), acetals (polyoxymethylenes/POMs), polypropylenes (PPs), acrylonitrile butadienes (ABSs), and fluorinated ethylene propylenes (FEPs). The thermoset plastics include TS polyesters (unsaturated polyesters), epoxies (EPs), TS polyurethanes (PURs), diallyl phthalates (DAPs), phenolics (phenol formaldehydes/PFs), silicones (Sis), and melamine formaldehydes (MFs). RTSs predominate for the high performance applications with RTFs fabricating more products. The RTPs continue to expand in the electronic, automotive, aircraft, underground pipe, appliance, camera, and many other products. [Pg.14]

Although the data concerning these polymers are quite limited, both TCBP euid TCBS (as well as some of their appropriate derivatives) have been incorporated into thermoplastic and thermoset resin systems including polycarbonates (9,10,11), polysulfones (12), thermostable (aromatic) polyesters (13), alk polyesters ( ), unsaturated polyesters Tl5,16) and epoxy resins (16). [Pg.52]

Unsaturated polyesters These thermoset materials have quite good radiation resistance, especially if they contain mineral fillers or glass fibers. They can be expected to withstand greater than 1000 Mrads. (General radiation resistance excellent.)... [Pg.267]

Polyester Resin—Thermosetting resins produced by dissolving unsaturated, generally linear, alkyd resins in a vinyl type monomer such as styrene and capable of being crosslinked by vinyl polymerisation using initiators and promoters. [Pg.9]

Unsaturated Polyesters. Unsaturated polyesters are the fourth largest family of thermosetting plastics, with a U.S. market volume of 2 biUion Ib/. They are often called thermosetting polyesters or alkyds. In commercial use for 60 yr and now fairly mature, they are the largest class of reinforced plastics (Table 3.16), popularly used in budding panels, chemical equipment, boats, cars, buses, trains, and planes. [Pg.144]

Polyvinyl acetate is added as low-profile resin in unsaturated thermosetting polyester to decrease shrinkage and prevent reinforcing fibers from protruding. It thus gives improved surface. [Pg.372]

Unsaturated polyester-based thermosets account for >70 % of the total global volume of all the glass fiber-reinforced thermosetting composites currently used (Atkins 1978 Majumdar 2008). [Pg.1863]

After removal of water and cooling, the fluid polyester may be dissolved in a reactive monomer in the same kettle, or it may be shipped to users who add the monomer and catalyst in their plants. Styrene is most widely used as the reactive monomer. Others sometimes used as diallyl phthalate, diallyl isophthalate, and triallyl cyanurate. A peroxide catalyst is generally used for the final co-polymerization. These unsaturated polyesters are thermosetting and are most widely used in reinforced plastics for making boat hulls, trays containers, and panels, and in potting of electrical assemblies. [Pg.747]

Unsaturated, thermosetting polyesters are produced by addition polymerization reactions. Polyester resins can be formulated to have a range of physical properties from brittle and hard to tough and resistant to soft and flexible. Viscosities at room temperature may range from 50 to more than 25,000 cP. The polyester resin formulation usually consists of resin, monomer, inhibitors, catalyst or promoters, and appropriate fillers, additives, etc. [Pg.424]
