Polyester Thermosetting Polyester

Polyethylene can be crosslinked with peroxides to make it more suitable for coatings for electrical power cables [18]. Peroxides are also used to crosslink (also called cure) thermoset polyesters. Thermoset polyesters have a reactive alkene and are used to make fiberglass compositions such as used for boat hulls. Variations are possible, but commonly they are copolymers of fumaric acid or maleic anhydride with phthalic acid or isophthalic acid and a diol. The oligomer is typically dissolved in styrene. When a peroxide is mixed with the solution, crosslinking occurs and the polyester cures. The styrene solvent takes part in the reaction and the solution hardens. [Pg.150]

Thermoplastic polyesters achieved some commercial success during the mid-1980s however, these were eventually replaced by nylon coating powders in functional coatings and thermosetting polyester powders in decorative appHcations because of lack of any unique characteristics or price advantages (see Polyesters, thermoplastic). [Pg.319]

The thermoplastic or thermoset nature of the resin in the colorant—resin matrix is also important. For thermoplastics, the polymerisation reaction is completed, the materials are processed at or close to their melting points, and scrap may be reground and remolded, eg, polyethylene, propjiene, poly(vinyl chloride), acetal resins (qv), acryhcs, ABS, nylons, ceUulosics, and polystyrene (see Olefin polymers Vinyl polymers Acrylic ester polymers Polyamides Cellulose ESTERS Styrene polymers). In the case of thermoset resins, the chemical reaction is only partially complete when the colorants are added and is concluded when the resin is molded. The result is a nonmeltable cross-linked resin that caimot be reworked, eg, epoxy resins (qv), urea—formaldehyde, melamine—formaldehyde, phenoHcs, and thermoset polyesters (qv) (see Amino resins and plastics Phenolic resins). [Pg.456]

Practical methods for synthesis and elucidation of the optimum physical forms were developed at Du Pont (13). The violets fill the void in the color gamut when the inorganics are inadequate. The quinacridones may be used in most resins except polymers such as nylon-6,6, polystyrene, and ABS. They are stable up to 275°C and show excellent weatherabiUty. One use is to shade phthalocyanines to match Indanthrone Blue. In carpeting, the quinacridones are recommended for polypropylene, acrylonitrile, polyester, and nylon-6 filaments. Predispersions in plastici2ers ate used in thermoset polyesters, urethanes, and epoxy resins (14). [Pg.462]

Special grades of styrenic block copolymers are usehil modifiers for sheet mol ding compounds (SMC) based on thermoset polyesters. They improve surface appearance, impact resistance, and hot strength. [Pg.19]

Certain plastics provide higher strength and stiffness a broad range of properties exit. Even though there are literally over 35,000 plastics available worldwide (for all plastic fabricating processes) only a few hundred are used in RPs. In turn only a few of those are predominantly used in most of the RPs. The thermoplastics (TPs) include principally nylons and polypropylenes, as well as polycarbonates, acetals and polyesters. Thermosets (TSs) include predominantly polyesters as well as epoxies, phenolics and urethanes. [Pg.509]

Uses. There are about forty to fifty organic peroxides commercially available in more than seventy formulations designed for specific applications which include (1) initiators for vinyl monomer polymerizations, and copolymerizations of monomers such as vinyl chloride, ethylene, styrene, vinyl acetate, acrylics, fluoroolefms and buta-dienestyrene (2) curing agents for thermoset polyesters, styrenated alkyds and oils, silicone rubbers and poly allyl diglycol carbonates ... [Pg.681]

The primary UPR end markets are construction, automotive, and marine industries widi applications such as house paneling, tub and shower applications, chemical-resistant storage tanks, pultruded profiles, and fiberglass composite boat hulls. The UPR industry is mature, with a world production close to 1.7 million tons (Table 2.2), but must face two important issues increasingly strict regulations for styrene emissions and poor recycling potential for polyester thermosets.48 49... [Pg.30]

Polyester thermosets, bodi UPR and alkyd resins, are facing severe regulatory issues for limiting VOC and toxic compound emissions. Although these issues are not new, only pardy satisfying solutions have been proposed until now, and further research is clearly needed in this domain. [Pg.31]
