Unsaturated thermosets

Composite In polymer technology a combination of a polymeric matrix and a reinforcing fiber with properties that the component materials do not have. The most common matrix resins are unsaturated thermosetting polyesters and epoxies, and reinforcing fibers are glass, carbon, and aramid fibers. The reinforcing fibers may be continuous or discontinuous. Some matrix resins are thermoplastics. [Pg.252]

Thermoset plastics have also been pyrolysed with a view to obtain chemicals for recycling into the petrochemical industry. Pyrolysis of a polyester/styrene copolymer resin composite produced a wax which consisted of 96 wt% of phthalic anhydride and an oil composed of 26 wt% styrene. The phthalic anhydride is used as a modifying agent in polyester resin manufacture and can also be used as a cross-linking agent for epoxy resins. Phthalic anhydride is a characteristic early degradation product of unsaturated thermoset polyesters derived from orf/io-phthalic acid [56, 57]. Kaminsky et al. [9] investigated the pyrolysis of polyester at 768°C in a fiuidized-bed reactor and reported 18.1 wt% conversion to benzene. [Pg.309]

Polyvinyl acetate is added as low-profile resin in unsaturated thermosetting polyester to decrease shrinkage and prevent reinforcing fibers from protruding. It thus gives improved surface. [Pg.372]

Polybutadiene-type resins n. Unsaturated, thermosetting hydrocarbons cured by a peroxide-catalyzed, vinyl-type polymerization reaction, or by sodium-catalyzed polymerization of butadiene or blends of butadiene and styrene. Liquid systems, curable in the presence of monomers, are used for casting, encapsulation, and potting of electrical components, and in making laminates. Molding compounds, often containing fillers and modified with other resins or rubbers, may be compression or transfer molded. Syndiotactic 1,2-butadiene, introduced in 1974 in Japan, is thermoplastic, with semicrystalline nature, with good transparency and flexibility without plasticization. In the presence of a photosensitizer such as p,p -tetramethyl... [Pg.741]

Unsaturated, thermosetting polyesters are produced by addition polymerization reactions. Polyester resins can be formulated to have a range of physical properties from brittle and hard to tough and resistant to soft and flexible. Viscosities at room temperature may range from 50 to more than 25,000 cP. The polyester resin formulation usually consists of resin, monomer, inhibitors, catalyst or promoters, and appropriate fillers, additives, etc. [Pg.424]

Alkyds are formulated from polyester resins, cross-linking monomers, and fillers of mineral or glass. The unsaturated polyester resins used for thermosetting alkyds are the reaction products of polyfunctional organic alcohols (glycols) and dibasic organic acids. [Pg.1013]

Unsaturated resias based on 1,4-cyclohexanedimethanol are useful ia gel coats and ia laminating and molding resias where advantage is taken of the properties of very low water absorption and resistance to boiling water (6). Thermal stabiHty is imparted to molding resias, both thermoplastic (71,72) and thermoset (73—76), enabling retention of physical and electrical properties at elevated temperatures (77). Additionally, resistance to chemical and environmental exposure is characteristic of products made from these resias (78). [Pg.374]

MixedPhosphona.te Esters. Unsaturated, mixed phosphonate esters have been prepared from monoesters of 1,4-cyclohexanedimethanol and unsaturated dicarboxyhc acids. Eor example, maleic anhydride reacts with this diol to form the maleate, which is treated with benzenephosphonic acid to yield an unsaturated product. These esters have been used as flame-retardant additives for thermoplastic and thermosetting resias (97). [Pg.374]

Polyester Resins. Reinforced polyester resins are thermosets based on unsaturated polyesters from glycols and dibasic acids, either or both of which contain reactive double bonds. The ratio of saturated to unsaturated components controls the degree of cross-linking and thus the rigidity of the product (see Polyesters, unsaturated). Typically, the glycols and acids are esterified until a viscous Hquid results, to which an inhibitor is added to prevent premature gelation. Addition of the monomer, usually styrene, reduces the viscosity to an easily workable level. [Pg.328]

Certain state highway authorities are studyiag the use of ftber-reiaforced polymers, typically thermosets such as epoxy or unsaturated polyester, for bridge constmction. On an even more futuristic scale, fiber optics that employ polymeric jacketing and, ia some cases, optically active polymeric cores, may someday be employed ia place of wines for home security systems, climate control, etc (10,91). [Pg.338]

Thermosetting unsaturated polyester resins constitute the most common fiber-reinforced composite matrix today. According to the Committee on Resin Statistics of the Society of Plastics Industry (SPl), 454,000 t of unsaturated polyester were used in fiber-reinforced plastics in 1990. These materials are popular because of thek low price, ease of use, and excellent mechanical and chemical resistance properties. Over 227 t of phenoHc resins were used in fiber-reinforced plastics in 1990 (1 3). PhenoHc resins (qv) are used when thek inherent flame retardance, high temperature resistance, or low cost overcome the problems of processing difficulties and lower mechanical properties. [Pg.18]

Modified Bismaleimides. Bismaleknide resins may be further modified and blended with other thermoset resins or reactive diluents to achieve either specific end-use properties or processibiUty. Thermoset resins that can be used for modification are unsaturated polyesters, vinylesters, cyanate esters, and epoxies. [Pg.30]

In September 1964 the Du Pont company announced materials that had characteristics of both thermoplastics and thermosetting materials. These materials, known as ionomers, are prepared by copolymerising ethylene with a small amount (1-10 % in the basic patent) of an unsaturated carboxylic acid such as acrylic acid using the high-pressure process. Such copolymers are then treated... [Pg.277]
