Certain plastics provide higher strength and stiffness a broad range of properties exit. Even though there are literally over 35,000 plastics available worldwide (for all plastic fabricating processes) only a few hundred are used in RPs. In turn only a few of those are predominantly used in most of the RPs. The thermoplastics (TPs) include principally nylons and polypropylenes, as well as polycarbonates, acetals and polyesters. Thermosets (TSs) include predominantly polyesters as well as epoxies, phenolics and urethanes. [Pg.509]

The primary UPR end markets are construction, automotive, and marine industries widi applications such as house paneling, tub and shower applications, chemical-resistant storage tanks, pultruded profiles, and fiberglass composite boat hulls. As a preliminary step in the manufacture of unsaturated polyester thermoset plastic one uses low molecular weight linear polyester (Mr 10,000) obtained by a polycondensation of polyglycols with saturated and unsaturated dicarboxylic acids. The precondensate can then be dissolved and stored in the stabilized comonomer, e.g. styrene, with which it will be crosslinked later. The crosslinking polymerization reaction between the polyester chains and the styrene bridges is initiated with the help of organic peroxides which are added dispersed in plasticizers. The reaction begins at 60-90 °C and then proceeds exothermally. In addition to this a cold hardening reaction can also be carried out. Compression molding is an older method of polymer processing that is still currently used for parts such as polyester thermoset engine covers or polyamide transmission seals. The resin will be placed in half of the mold (generally the female half shown in Figure 5.4). The male half of the press will compress the resin to a pressure of about 15 MPa. Thermosets comprise crosshnked and network polymers such as phenoUcs and polyesters. Thermosets, also known as thermosetting polymers, become permanently hard on heating and do not soften again. At a molecular level, crosslinks form between 10-50 per cent of the acljacent polymer chains so that they can resist the vibrational and rotational chain movements induced on heating.
