Calcium hydroxide [Ca (OH) ] is known as slaked or hydrated lime and is formed by exposing calcium oxide to water. Slaked lime is less caustic than quick lime. Therefore, it is used to line football fields. (Unslaked lime, CaO, is very caustic when wet, and if it is used on playing fields, players may receive caustic burns.) Calcium hydroxide has many uses, including as an ingredient for stonemasons mortar, cements, whitewash, and soil conditioner (high pH), as a food additive, and as a human depilatory. [Pg.75]

Calcium oxide (CaO, lime, quicklime, unslaked lime) is differentiated from calcium hydroxide [Ca(OH)2, slaked lime, hydrated lime] and limestone (CaC03, calcite, calcium carbonate, marble chips, chalk) by formula and by behavior. A saturated solution of calcium oxide in water is called limewater and a suspension in water is called milk of lime. [Pg.131]

Crude lanolin is saponified with a weak alkali and the resultant saponified fat emulsion is centrifuged to remove the aqueous phase. The aqueous phase contains a soap solution from which, on standing, a layer of partially purified lanolin separates. This material is then further refined by treatment with calcium chloride, followed by fusion with unslaked lime to dehydrate the lanolin. The lanolin is finally extracted with acetone and the solvent is removed by distillation. [Pg.400]

Depends on the specific alkali. Alkalies are primarily used as cleaning agents, bleaches, and unslaked lime. [Pg.76]

Hazard Unslaked lime (quicklime) yields heat on mixing with water and is a caustic irritant. [Pg.756]

QUALITY - Weight fraction of the vapor in a vapor-liquid mixture. QUICKLIME - Unslaked lime (calcium oxide). [Pg.123]

Lime is calcium oxide (1305-78-8). Quicklime is unslaked lime. Dolomitic quicklime is a carbonate of calcium and magnesium. On contact with moisture (slaking), these substances generate heat as they react to produce calcium and magnesium hydroxides, solutions of which are alkaline skin irritants. [Pg.222]
