Platinum-cobalt color scale

Some laboratories measure the absorbance at a specified wavelength using a spectrophotometer and convert the absorbance reading to the iodine or platinum-cobalt color scale using a linear calibration plot. These calibrations are, strictly speaking, only valid when the absorbance spectrum of the colored impurity of interest is exactly the same as that of iodine/iodide or of platinum/cobalt solution. [Pg.21]

Koyuncu et al. [56] presented pilot-scale studies on the treatment of pulp and paper mill effluents using two-stage membrane filtrations, ultrafiltration and reverse osmosis [56]. The combination of UF and RO resulted in very high removals of COD, color, and conductivity from the effluents. At the end of a single pass with seawater membrane, the initial COD, color and conductivity values were reduced to 10-20 mg/L, 0-100 PCCU (platinum cobalt color units) and 200-300 ps/cm, respectively. Nearly complete color removals were achieved in the RO experiments with seawater membranes. [Pg.471]

The classic platinum-cobalt color method, ASTM Test Method D1209, Color of Clear Liquids (Platinum-Cobalt Scale), which requires subjective visual color comparison, is slowly being replaced by methods such as ASTM Test Method D5386, Color of Liquids Using Tiistimulus Colorimetry. This new standard is currently limited to a maximum color of 30 because, for higher color values, the vendors algorithms to convert tristimulus values to Pt-Co color produce different results. Currently, three major instrument manufacturers are... [Pg.44]

Table III gives a survey of the essential characteristics of the alcohols. It is remarkable that, despite the poor color value of the sulfuric acid test, esters can be obtained from the two hexanols with color values falling within the range of the platinum cobalt scale from 35 to 50. The freezing point measurement, standard method for the detennination of styrene assay until the 1970s, has been largely replaced by gas chromatography. Color is measured spectrophotometrically and registered on the APILA or the platinum-cobalt scale. [Pg.1556]

Aromatic hydrocarbons which melt below 150 C can be subjected to color analysis in the liquid (molten) state using a visual comparison with platinum-cobalt standards. Standards are prepared Irom a stock solution of K2PtCl2 to form a scale varying in color intensity. Similar procedure was developed to evaluate color of halogenated organic solvents and their admixtures. ... [Pg.1056]

Objective color measurement is based on tristimulus colorimetry. " This instrumental method measures tristimulus values of light transmitted by a sample and compares the results to the values transmitted by distilled water. The results can be recalculated to the platinum-cobalt scale referred to in the previous standards. The results can also be interpreted by normal methods of color measurement to yellowness index, color, color depth, etc. [Pg.1056]

Platinum-cobalt scale is rrsed for eshmation of color of clear hqtrids. This method gives resrrlts of measrrrements in units equivalent to ASTM method. There are some small differences in the method of color comparison and equipment used. [Pg.76]

Saybolt chromometer is used for determination of color of refined oils, petroleum waxes and pharmaceutical white oils. The color standard is compared with the sample by changing the height of the column of a sample until the color is lighter than the standard. The recorded depth of oil is given a Saybolt color number which is reported. It was reported that +25 in Saybolt scale is equivalent to 25 in the platinum-cobalt system. Exact equivalence between two methods is not known. [Pg.77]

There are available specifications of some key plasticizers which can be used as examples for preparation of specification for other plasticizers. Standard specification for octyl o-phthalate includes di-(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate and mixed isooctyl phthalates. Acidity, acid number, ester content, specific gravity, color according to platinum-cobalt scale, and moisture content are specified. Also packaging and package marking are discussed. [Pg.86]
