Plasticisers are substances with relative molar masses well below those of polymers, usually liquids that, when added to polymers, give apparently homogeneous materials that are softer, more flexible, and easier to process than the polymer alone. A typical example of the use of plasticisers is the incorporation of di-isooctyl phthalate into PVC, which at levels of 70 parts of phthalate to 100 parts of PVC converts the polymer from a rigid solid at room temperature into a rubbery material with uses in the field of protective clothing. Thus the of the PVC is reduced from a value higher than room temperature to one that occurs below it. 

Within-class discrimination is an important factor in the forensic examination of materials, and Py-GC is an appropriate techniqne to distinguish closely related polymers. Vinyl acetate polymers, for example, may be plasticized internally or externally. Copolymers inclnde ethylhexyl acrylate, while phthalate plasticizers, such as dibutyl or di-isooctyl phthalate, may be used as external plasticizers in commercial products.

Filled PVC compounds can be flame-retarded by alumina trihydrate. Figure 5.9 shows the burning time of flame-retarded PVC plasticized by 50 phr. of di-isooctyl phthalate. Extinction time after the ignition of a horizontal rod specimen at environmental temperature of 100 or 120 °C is plotted against the additive content. In Figure 5.10, differential thermal analysis (DTA) curves of the same PVC compounds are presented.
