Color scale

All echo amplitudes between -12 dB and + 2 dB, with reference to 50% signal height on the screen, are detected and shown in a color scale display in steps of 2 dB.

Color can be removed effectively and economically with either alum or ferric sulfate at pH values of 5—6 and 3—4, respectively. The reaction is stoichiometric and is a specific reaction of the coagulant with the color to form an insoluble compound (17). The dosage required may be as high as 100—150 mg/L (380—570 mg/gal). Raw-water colors may be as high as 450—500 units on the APHA color scale. The secondary MCL (maximum contaminant level) for color in the finished water is 15 units, although most municipal treatment plants produce water that seldom exceeds 5 units. 

Guanine is obtained fiom various fish including menhaden, herring, and alewives. To prepare the colorant, scales are scraped from the fish, levigated, and washed with water, and then made into one or more commercial forms, depending on the intended use. Typically, guanine is suppHed as a paste or suspension in water, castor oil, or nitrocellulose. Guanine is not a colorant in the strict sense but instead is used to produce iridescence in a product. 

Detection limit of periodate determination is 1,35 pg per sample. The color scale for visual test-determination has been constmcted in working range 5-50 pg periodate-ion per sample.

Light is the primary carrier of photosynthetic energy and also the initial producer of natural food colorants. To speak about the color of an object is to speak simultaneously about the illuminating light source, light transmitting medium, object properties, eye sensitivity, and conventions about color scales. Teleologically viewed, food color has two ambivalent main functions ... 

Although Equation 10.17 is written in terms of concentration of a specific component, it can also be used if the identity of the solute is unknown. For example, adsorption is used to remove color from liquids. In such cases, the concentration of solute can be measured, for example, by a colorimeter and Equation 10.17 expressed in terms of arbitrary units of color intensity, providing the color scale varies linearly with the concentration of the solute responsible for the color.
