More recently, alternative chemistries have been employed to coat oxide surfaces with SAMs. These have included carboxylic 1129, 1301, hydroxamic 11311, phosphonic 1124, 1321 and phosphoric acids 11331. Niobium like tantalum relies for its corrosion resistance on a highly adherent passive oxide film it is however not as resistant as tantalum in the more aggressive media. In no case reported in the literature is niobium inert to corrosives that attack tantalum. Niobium has not therefore been used extensively for corrosion resistant applications and little information is available on its performance in service conditions. It is more susceptible than tantalum to embrittlement by hydrogen and to corrosion by many aqueous corrodants. Although it is possible to prevent hydrogen embrittlement of niobium under some conditions by contacting it with platinum the method does not seem to be broadly effective. Niobium is attacked at room temperature by hydrofluoric acid and at 100°C by concentrated hydrochloric, sulphuric and phosphoric acids. It is embrittled by sodium hydroxide presumably as the result of hydrogen absorption and it is not suited for use with sodium sulphide. [Pg.854]

Etch primers are widely used. They are mostly based on polyvinyl butyral and contain chromates and phosphoric acid. They are said to act both as primers and as etching solutions because it is believed that the chromates and phosphoric acid form an inorganic him, which provides adhesion, while oxidised polyvinyl butyral provides an organic him. For direct application to new galvanised steel, the best known primers are based on calcium orthoplumbate pigment and metallic lead, but these are now less used for environmental reasons. Although this account of gelation is made with reference to organic polyelectrolytes, it is of wider application and may be applied to phosphoric acid cements.
