Phosphated surfactants

Smaller amounts of the phosphate esters of the polyethylene glycol which is present ia the ethoxylated alcohol and a trace of NaH2P02 are also present. Table 13 gives aUst of commercial phosphate surfactants. 

In order to obtain anionic polyoxyethylene phosphate surfactants, either the terminal hydroxy group of a polyoxyethylated hydrophobic substance is reacted with a phosphorylating agent or a phosphate ester is oxalkylated. Most often aliphatic and aliphatic-aromatic alcohols are first treated with an alkylene oxide and afterward with one of the phosphorylating agents, such as P4OI0, POCl3, phosphoric acid, or polyphosphoric acid [39-48].

A mixture of monolauryl phosphate sodium salt and triethylamine in H20 was treated with glycidol at 80°C for 8 h to give 98% lauryl 2,3-dihydro-xypropyl phosphate sodium salt [304]. Dyeing aids for polyester fibers exist of triethanolamine salts of ethoxylated phenol-styrene adduct phosphate esters [294], Fatty ethanolamide phosphate surfactant are obtained from the reaction of fatty alcohols and fatty ethanolamides with phosphorus pentoxide and neutralization of the product [295]. A double bond in the alkyl group of phosphoric acid esters alter the properties of the molecule. Diethylethanolamine salt of oleyl phosphate is effectively used as a dispersant for antimony oxide in a mixture of xylene-type solvent and water. The composition is useful as an additive for preventing functional deterioration of fluid catalytic cracking catalysts for heavy petroleum fractions. When it was allowed to stand at room temperature for 1 month it shows almost no precipitation [241].

The indirect exposure to PFCAs through ingestion of chemicals applied to food contact paper packaging was investigated by D eon and Mabury [146]. In this study, the load of PFCAs in rats was quantified following exposure to polyfluoroalkyl phosphate surfactants (PAPS), a class of nonpolymeric PFCs approved for application to food contact paper products. Increased levels of PFOA were observed in the dosed animals, linking ingestion of PAPS with in vivo production of perfluorinated acids [146].

A phosphated surfactant with excellent wetting speed. It is stable in caustic solutions. Also, it is of interest for its antistatic properties.

Both, alkyl phosphates and alkyl ether phosphates are made by treating the fatty alcohol or alcohol ethoxylates with a phosphorylating agent, usually phosphorous pentoxide, P4OJQ. The reaction yields a mixture of monoesters and diesters of phosphoric acid, with the ratio of the two esters being determined by the ratio of the reactants and the amount of water present in the reaction mixture. The physico-chemical properties of the alkyl phosphate surfactants depend on the ratio of the esters. Phosphate surfactants are used in the metal-working industry, due to their anticorrosive properties.
