Light-duty detergents

Alcohol ether sulfates are used in mixture with sulfonates, either alkyl-benzenesulfonates or a-olefinsulfonates, and other surfactants, such as fatty alkanolamides, in manual liquid dishwashing detergents and light-duty detergents. These combinations show the excellent emulsifying and foaming properties required in dishwashing.

The chemical differences between low active and super amides dictate the fields of application. The low active products are liquids used where high purity is not required and where the amine soap helps disperse other ingredients. Super amides are produced in twice the quantity and used in solid products, shampoos and light duty detergents as foam stabilisers. They are generally waxy solids.

Another widening field of application is the light-duty detergent market. Advantages are viscosity control, freeze stability and less use of hydro-tropes. 

They foam satisfactorily, are mild to the skin, and are therefore mainly used in manual dishwashing formulations (- cleaners), shampoos and light-duty - detergents. They are replacements for fatty acid alkanolamides as foam builders. Their higher price is compensated by better performance. They are also used as phase transfer catalysts and in the textile industry as dyeing auxiliaries and antistatics. A. are marketed in solution or paste form (30-55% d.s.) 45 000 mt (1987)were consumed in the United States with 80% going into household products. 

In addition to these sulfonates which represent the main proportion of the total production of anionic surfactants, other special products are very important as raw materials for cosmetics, textile aids, light-duty detergents and the like.
