PHOENIX program

The Phoenix program experiments were conducted in the Materials Test Reactor (MTR) at the INEL, the Plutonium Recycle Critical Facility at PNL, and the Physical Constants Testing Reactor at PNL. 

Individual process steps identified in a conceptual design (reactors or separation/purification units) are studied experimentally in the laboratory and/or by computer simulation (see simulation programs as given in SOFTWARE DIRECTORY or Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) programs for studying fluid dynamics, such as PHOENIX, FLUENT, and FIDAP).

Taschler, David R., PE is a business manager at Air Products and Chemicals, Inc. in Allentown, PA and an adjunct professor in the Engineering Division at Lafayette College in Easton, PA. He conducted his doctoral research on the Characteristics of Board of Director Members and Corporate Commitment to Sustainable Development at the University of Phoenix. Dr. Taschler is a former Management Verifier for the American Chemistry Council s Responsible Care program and is a member of the AIChE Sustainability Division and the Academy of Management. 

For over 25 years, Dr. Friedewald practiced internal medicine and cardiology, initially in 1971 as Director of Diagnostic Laboratories at the Arizona Heart Institute in Phoenix. In 1976 he assumed the position of Chief of Cardiology and Chairman of the Department of Internal Medicine at the Honolulu Medical Group at Queen s Medical Center in Honolulu. He returned to Houston in 1982 to practice cardiology as a member of the faculty at Baylor and serve as Director of the Cardiac Noninvasive Laboratory and the Cardiac Rehabilitation Program at the Kelsey-Seybold Clinic.

Table 6.3 summarizes the evolution of the computer hardware typically employed in automated x-ray spectrometers. The movement proceeded from punch cards to paper tape (1968), then to tape cassette (1970), to floppy disk (1972), to Phoenix hard drive (1974), to Winchester disk technology (1975), to the personal computer (1980), and finally arrived at the implementation of the CD-ROM (1987). Not insignificant in this development cycle is the impact on the software. In the days of 4K minicomputers supported by paper tape all programs were written in assembler language. With the industry rate of one instruction per hour for a good programmer, a 4K program took the best part of two years to write. Needless to... 

The procedure for extracting the phonon DOS from the energy dependence of the probability for nuclear inelastic absorption and calculation of the vibrational thermodynamics has been coded in three programs DOS [110], PHOENIX [III], and INES [I 12]. They are freely available from the authors.

The following case study is from the City of Phoenix Water Services Department s Near Miss Program (Nevitt, 2011), which is one element of their Five-Star Safety and Health Management System consisting of 73 elements. 

Based on the concept that for every serious injury there are 600 near misses that occur prior to the injury, the City of Phoenix Water Services Department (PWSD) implemented a near miss program as part of its Safety Management System. 

The formed dose-response functions were incorporated into a Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) software program, simulating the environment of a sample within a Phoenix-exposed IP/DP (Instrument Panel/Door Panel box) box, based on sun position and weather conditions, including radiation interactions. Observed local effects as well as the general ageing advance of PP hats are compared with respect to simulation and experiment.
