JChemPaint is a chemical structure drawing applet. The noteworthy characteristic of this 2D molecule editor is that it is an open source program [208]. This means that the software and the source code of the program are freely available. Every programmer or interested person can participate and enter individual special requests for further development of the application. [Pg.144]

Another area where improved air quaUty has impacted on sulfur use is ia agriculture. As sulfur dioxide emissions have decreased, sulfur content of soils has also decreased. Sulfur, recognized as the fourth most important plant nutrient, is necessary for the most efficient use of other nutrients and optimum plant growth. Because many soils are becoming sulfur-deficient, a demand for sulfur-containing fertilizers has been created. Farmers must therefore apply a nutrient that previously was freely available through atmospheric deposition and low grade fertilizers. [Pg.123]

Membrane extraetion ean also be a basis for environmental field sampling and for determination of freely available fraetions of both metal ions and organie eompounds. Proeedures and deviees for this ai e developed, as will be deseribed in the presentation. [Pg.244]

All the early work was concerned with atoms, with Sir William Hartree regarded as the father of the technique. His son, Douglas R. Hartree, published the definitive book, The Calculation of Atomic Structures, in 1957, and in this he derived the atomic HF equations and described numerical algorithms for their solution. Charlotte Froese Fischer was a research student working under the guidance of D. R. Hartree, and she published her own definitive book. The Hartree—Fock Method for Atoms A Numerical Approach in 1977. The Appendix lists a number of freely available atomie structure programs. Most of these can be obtained from the Computer Physics Communications Program Library. [Pg.113]

We conclude this chapter with a few illustrative color plates. Simple B W graphics are sufficient for viewing CA only in the special case when sites take on one of two values. In all other cases, color is indispensable for visualizing the behavior of the system. The plates were produced using the freely available CA software packages MCell, Cellab and WinCA. See Appendix A CA Research Tools for a description of these programs and links to web sites from which they can be HnwnlnnHpH... [Pg.156]

The industrial process for which this methodology was developed comprised polymerizing a monomer in the presence of a mixed solvent, the catalyst and other Ingredients. Once the batch polymerization is complete, the product requires removal of the solvents to a specified level. The solvents, an aromatic Cy and aliphatic Cy compounds, are removed by a two-step process schematically shown in Figure 1. As shown, the polymer slurry is initially flashed to a lower pressure (Pj ) in the presence of steam and water. The freely available solvent in the polymer-solvent mixture is removed by the shift in thermodynamic equilibrium. Solvent attached to the surface of the polymer particle is removed by the steam. In this first step, 90% of the total solvents are recovered. The remaining solvents are recovered in the second flash, where the effluent is almost all water with very low concentrations of the solvents. [Pg.99]

In contrast to the controlled use of these compounds in the neighborhood of farms and human habitation, they have sometimes been used in a less controlled way against rodents and vertebrate predators, which causes problems in conserved areas. In a number of conserved islands in New Zealand, for example, bait containing brodiphacoum has been used for rodent control, both at bait stations and by aerial distribution (Eason et al. 2002). In the latter case, poisoned bait is freely available, and herbivores and omnivores, as well as predators and scavengers are at high risk. This problem will be discussed further in Section 11.6. [Pg.223]

Appropriate standards and guidelines should be developed and used as tools for the application of all regulatoiy processes. They should be freely available to all stakeholders, including the public, in order to increase the transparency of the DRA s operations. The same standard of regulation should be applied to all dmgs, whether they are imported and/or manufactured by the public or the private sector, and destined for domestic consumption or for export. [Pg.136]

However, the cost of simple substitution and shallow innovation can be substantial. The new EU regulations on Registration, Evaluation and Authorisation of Chemicals (REACH) are expected to result in a large number of chemicals that are currently freely available to vanish from the market. Formulated commercial products such as inks, adhesives and paints can contain up to 60 individual chemicals in one formulation. If one of these is withdrawn as a result of REACH, the potential costs of reformulation can be very high. [Pg.45]

Reported data should achieve a clear, purpose-oriented level of accuracy and precision, especially when data produced by several laboratories often needs to be compared as part of a decision process. It has become accepted by more and more analysts that to overcome differences between national standards and specifications and measurement procedures or to make Total Quality Management (TQM) an achievable reality, freely available and internationally agreed points of reference are needed. Therefore RMs and CRMs must be easily available indeed the availability of reference materials has been described as an issue of strategic importance to the EU (Maier et al. 1997). [Pg.256]

Simply producing reference materials is not enough they have to be used properly. Chapter 7 reviewed the proper use of RMs, but unless RMs and CRMs can be easily obtained and moved from one country to another without delays, duty or unnecessary controls, their use will be inhibited. Likewise, information about the materials that are available, their use, and their application should be freely available if analysts are to make informed decisions about the selection and use of a RM or CRM. It has already been made clear in previous Chapters that the correct choice of reference material for a particular application requires not only information about the RM, which is relatively easily available, but also information about the uses and applications of the reference material. Unfortunately, neither the availability of information about the reference materials and their uses nor their free movement across national borders are at all satisfactory. [Pg.256]

Adult, male, Sprague-Dawley rats obtained from Charles River Labs and weighing 200-250 gm on arrival were used. Throughout the study, the rats were housed individually, with water freely available. Purina Rat Chow was fed after each experimental session and on weekends, in quantities adjusted to maintain the rats between 270 and 350 gm throughout the experiment. [Pg.149]
