Paper tapes

A year later, a novel method of encoding chemical structures via typewriter input (punched paper tape) was described by Feldmann [42]. The constructed typewriter had a special character set and recorded on the paper tape the character struck and the position (coordinates) of the character on the page. These input data made it possible to produce tabular representations of the structure. [Pg.44]

For large motors, the practice is to wind the stator with formed coils (Figure 9.2). The coils are pre-formed and cured before insertion into the stator slots. They are insulated with resin-rich glass and mica paper tapes. The process of impregnation is therefore termed resin-rich insulation. The completed formed wound stator is then heated to remove trapped moisture and finally impregnated in varnish class F or H as required, under vacuum and pressure. The stator is then cured in an oven as described above. The process of insulation and curing conforms to powerhouse insulation requirements. This practice facili-... [Pg.222]

Portable or fixed multipoint colorimetric detectors are available which rely on paper tape impregnated with reagent. A cassette of the treated paper is driven electrically at constant speed over a sampling orifice and the stain intensity measured by an internal reflectometer to provide direct readout of concentration. Such instruments are available for a range of chemicals including those in Table 9.7. [Pg.218]

In order to do this, a simple calculator may be used to aid in the mathematical manipulations. A desktop computer into which the data is entered may be used to generate a standard curve automatically along with the unknown values which are automatically read from the curve. If a paper tape print out... [Pg.63]

Tape >System of Analysis. A tape system which is used widely for analysis in the Pediatric Laboratory is a system whose principle was developed by the author. A reagent is placed on a paper tape. The paper is covered with a membrane, such as cellophane, cellulose nitrate or cellulose acetate, porous to low molecular weight substances. Finally, the serum is placed above the porous membrane, so that diffusion of the components of serum take place and a stain is produced on the paper (60). This principle has been incorporated for example, with glucose oxidase, in the conmercially available Dextro-Sticks. In addition, a similar principle is being applied by some for the analysis of components in urine (Ames Co., South Bend, Indiana). [Pg.146]

Paper tapes impregnated with lead acetate have been widely used for air sample measurements of hydrogen sulfide in the field (EPA 1978 WHO 1981). The presence of other substances capable of oxidizing lead sulfide can lead to errors. This method has been improved by impregnating the paper with... [Pg.163]

It is interesting to trace the development of instrument automation over the relatively brief period of the past ten to fifteen years. Early in this period, a truly automated instrument was a rare and expensive item built around a costly dedicated minicomputer. Automated data collection and analysis from any instrument which was not automated at the factory was usually accomplished by digitizing the data and storing it on a transportable media such as paper tape. These data were then delivered and fed to a timeshare system of some sort on which the data reduction program ran and which printed a report and sometimes a plot of the data. Often a considerable time delay occured between the generation and the analysis of the data. The scientist was at the mercy of the computer elite who could implement his data logger and provide the necessary computer resources to analyze his data. The process was expensive, both in time and in money. [Pg.3]

Secure the explosive firmly to the plate with cloth, paper, tape, or string. A firmer charge can be made if a cardboard or metal container is fashioned to hold the explosive in shape behind the plate. [Pg.38]

Seed tapes Seeds are embedded in a biodegradable paper tape that is laid in a drill (see facing page). Thinning is unnecessary. [Pg.254]

In the 1970s, progress was made along several fronts for example, modems became available to transfer information over the telephone lines and hence cut out postal delays. In addition, instrumental data could be provided both as magnetic or paper tape output. Of course there were delays occasionally, but generally significant time improvements resulted. [Pg.229]

Hot water and steam pipes in some older homes may be covered with an asbestos-containing material, primarily as thermal insulation to reduce heat loss, and to protect nearby surfaces from the hot pipes. Pipes may also be wrapped in an asbestos blanket or asbestos paper tape. [Pg.87]
