Except for those marked exact, they are the 2006 CODATA (Committee on Data for Science and Technology) recommended values. Physical Properties. Benzene, C H, toluene, C Hj-CH, and petrol (a mixture of aliphatic hydrocarbons, e.g., pentane, hexane, etc.) are colourless liquids, insoluble in and lighter than water. Benzene and toluene, which have similar odours, are not readily distinguishable chemically, and their physical constants should therefore be carefully noted benzene, m.p. 5 (solidifies when a few ml. in a dry test-tube are chilled in ice-water), b.p. 8i toluene, m.p. —93°, b.p. 110°. Petroleum has a characteristic odour. [Pg.393]

Derivatives. The precise identification of a compound normally depends upon the preparation of a derivative and the determination of physical constants such as m.p. in the case of a solid. Many simple compounds can, however, be identified with a fair degree of certainty by intelligently-selected qualitative tests alone, e.g., formates, oxalates, succinates, lactates, tartrates, chloral hydrate. [Pg.402]

Determination of the physical constants and the establishment of the purity of the compound. For a solid, the melting point is of great importance if recrystalhsation does not alter it, the compound may be regarded as pure. For a hquid, the boiling point is first determined if most of it distils over a narrow range (say, 1-2°), it is reasonably pure. (Constant boUing point mixtures, compare Section 1,4, are, however known.) The refractive index and the density, from which the molecular refractivity may be calculated, are also valuable constants for liquids. [Pg.1027]

If the tests for an aldehyde are negative, the unknown compound is a ketone. When once the compound has been established as an aldehyde or ketone, it is permissible to refer to tables of physical constants information thus obtained may be of value in indicating other possible groups to be tested for, with due regard to possible comphcations caused by the presence of these groups. [Pg.1061]

Chapter XI is devoted to Qualitative Organic Analysis. The subject b discussed in moderate detail and this, coupled with the various Sections and Tables of Physical Constants of Organic Compounds and their Derivatives in Chapters III and IV, will provide a satisfactory course of study in this important branch of chemistry. The system of atomic units was developed to simplify mathematical equations by setting many fundamental constants equal to 1. This is a means for theorists to save on pencil lead and thus possible errors. It also reduces the amount of computer time necessary to perform chemical computations, which can be considerable. The third advantage is that any changes in the measured values of physical constants do not affect the theoretical results. Some theorists work entirely in atomic units, but many researchers convert the theoretical results into more familiar unit systems. Table 2.1 gives some conversion factors for atomic units. [Pg.9]
