Phenol was the first commercial antiseptic its introduction into hospitals in the 1870s led to a dramatic decrease in deaths from postoperative infections. Its use for this purpose has long since been abandoned because phenol burns exposed tissue, but many modern antiseptics are phenol derivatives. Toluene has largely replaced benzene as a solvent because it is much less toxic. Oxidation of toluene in the body gives benzoic acid, which is readily eliminated and has none of the toxic properties of the oxidation products of benzene. The classic seed burial studies of W. J. Beal and his successors have shown seeds of at least one weed species, Moth Mullein (Verbascum blattaria L.) can remain viable in soil for a peiod of 100 years, whereas three species continued to germinate after 80 years of burial (30). Although the condensation of phenol with formaldehyde has been known for more than 100 years, it is only recently that the reaction could be studied in detail. Recent developments in analytical instrumentation like GC, GPC, HPLC, IR spectroscopy and NMR spectroscopy have made it possible for the intermediates involved in such reactions to be characterized and determined (1.-6). In addition, high speed computers can now be used to simulate the complicated multi-component, multi-path kinetic schemes involved in phenol-formaldehyde reactions (6-27) and optimization routines can be used in conjunction with computer-based models for phenol-formaldehyde reactions to estimate, from experimental data, reaction rates for the various processes involved. Differentiation can be defined as the process of specialisation in terms of shape and function. An example is cell differentiation in plants, animals and humans a young cell, which is initially multifunctional, gradually acquires one specific function and shape. Specialisation is a refinement that is expressed in terms of shape, scent and colour. For example, fruits ripen, leaves change colour in the autumn, the growth of a shoot ends in a terminal bud and seeds become dormant. The primary components are converted into secondary components such as phenols, vitamins, aromas, wax, and so on. The consumption of a mixture of phenolic compounds presented in apple or purple grape juice inhibited mammary carcinogenesis in 7,12-dimethylbenzo[a]anthracene (DMBA) treated rats (Liu and others 2005 Jung and others 2006).
