Fall-fruiting raspberry canes do not need thinning, but restrict them to a band about... 

Leave the canes of summer-fruiting raspberries unpruned in their first year they will bear next season s crop. In the second and following years, once all the fruit has been picked, cut all the fruited canes only down to ground level. Tie in the new canes and thin if necessary as before. 

Autumn-fruiting raspberries are simpler to prune every year, including the first year, cut all the canes to the ground once fruiting is over. 

Anthocyanins occur widely in the red to blue coloured parts of plants Therefore, they can be found in several berry fruits, such as cherries and strawberries, in plums, eggplants, red cabbages, and radishes. Infections can also be passed on by vegetative propagation from infected plants. Certification programs exist in many countries to ensure that only virus-free plant stock is sold, most particularly of very susceptible fruits such as raspberries. 

If your yard is small, you may have to adapt your plans for fruit to fit the available space. You may decide that even just two raspberry plants, grown up each side of a freestanding post, are better than none. Even in the smallest garden, however, you can grow plentiful supplies of strawberries along the edge of a border or path, or in containers. 

Blueberries need very acidic conditions (pFI 5.5 or less) and most fruit thrives in slightly acidic soil (see Soil chemistry, pp.30-31). Flowever, the majority of fruits will tolerate alkaline conditions. Raspberries are an exception and become iron-deficient and weakened in soil with a pFI higher than 6.5. 

Raspberries are hardy in Zones 3-9 and fruit in sites that only get sun for half the day. They prefer fertile, free-draining soil with a pH of 6.5 or below. Raspberries are not happy in alkaline soil. Good drainage is vital raspberries are prone to a root rot that thrives in wet soils.

Summer raspberries In this useful double support system, with two rows of posts and wires (seen end-on here), the fruiting canes of summer raspberries are tied in to the wires, while new canes grow up freely in the space between, to be thinned and tied in when the fruited canes are pruned out. 

Water well in dry weather. In early summer, mulch to at least 3 ft (1 m) around the plant with straw or hay to help the soil retain moisture. Netting against birds may be needed. Raspberry beetle grubs (see p.311) may also be found in the fruits of these berries. 

Symptoms Plants fail to fruit, or fruit poorly. Raspberry and strawberry fruits may be distorted, or have dry areas. Plants are otherwise growing well.
