Ozonation equipment

When air is used as the feed gas in lab-scale ozonation equipment, a high-quality airdrying and oil-removal system similar to full-scale applications has to be installed following the compressor. Otherwise the generator may be destroyed from moisture, dust, oil, hydrocarbons and hydrogen. [Pg.56]

Many large water treatment chemical service companies have entered the ozone marketplace, primarily in response to customer inquiries, and have linked up with ozone equipment manufacturers in one way or another. For some service companies, these moves have probably been more of a way of being in contact with ozone market developments and warding off any real threat to their core business, rather than positively embracing the technology. [Pg.209]

Against the high costs of ozone equipment must be balanced the comparable costs of chlorine equipment, loading equipment, feeders, dechlorination equipment, retention tanks, railroad spurs, storage rooms, injectors, and similar items. Ozone is produced by outdoor installed generators having negligible maintenance. [Pg.67]

Nitrile mbber finds broad application in industry because of its excellent resistance to oil and chemicals, its good flexibility at low temperatures, high abrasion and heat resistance (up to 120°C), and good mechanical properties. Nitrile mbber consists of butadiene—acrylonitrile copolymers with an acrylonitrile content ranging from 15 to 45% (see Elastomers, SYNTHETIC, NITRILE RUBBER). In addition to the traditional applications of nitrile mbber for hoses, gaskets, seals, and oil well equipment, new applications have emerged with the development of nitrile mbber blends with poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC). These blends combine the chemical resistance and low temperature flexibility characteristics of nitrile mbber with the stability and ozone resistance of PVC. This has greatly expanded the use of nitrile mbber in outdoor applications for hoses, belts, and cable jackets, where ozone resistance is necessary. [Pg.186]

Pollutants. The problems posed by ak pollutants are very serious. Within a museum, measures can be taken to remove harmful substances as efficiently as possible by means of the installation of appropriate filter systems in the ventilation equipment. Proposed specification values for museum climate-control systems requke filtering systems having an efficiency for particulate removal in the dioctyl phthalate test of 60—80%. Systems must be able to limit both sulfur dioxide and nitrogen dioxide concentrations <10 /ig/m, and ozone to <2 /ig/m. ... [Pg.429]

Processing ndProperties. Neoprene has a variety of uses, both in latex and dry mbber form. The uses of the latex for dipping and coating have already been indicated. The dry mbber can be handled in the usual equipment, ie, mbber mills and Banbury mixers, to prepare various compounds. In addition to its excellent solvent resistance, polychloroprene is also much more resistant to oxidation or ozone attack than natural mbber. It is also more resistant to chemicals and has the additional property of flame resistance from the chlorine atoms. It exhibits good resiUence at room temperature, but has poor low temperature properties (crystallization). An interesting feature is its high density (1.23) resulting from the presence of chlorine in the chain this increases the price on a volume basis. [Pg.470]

Blends with PVC. Nitrile mbber may be blended with poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC) by the polymer producer by two different techniques (1) blending of NBR latex with PVC latex followed by co-coagulation and drying, or (2) physically mixing the soHd NBR and PVC powder in mixing equipment such as an internal mixer. NBR—PVC polymer blends are well known for the good ozone resistance that is imparted by the PVC. [Pg.522]

At one time it was widely expected that EPDM rubbers would become of significance in the tyre sector. For a variety of reasons but primarily because of the high cost of the diene monomers this expectation has not been realised. On the other hand these rubbers have become widely accepted as moderately heat-resisting materials with good weathering, oxygen and ozone resistance and they find extensive use in cars, domestic and industrial equipment. [Pg.300]

A typical ozone system consists of 100 g/hr at a concentration of 1.0 percent to 1.5 percent in air fed to the bottom of bleach collection tanks through ceramic spargers (pore size of approximately 100 t). The system contains air compression and drying equipment, automatic control features, and a flat-plate, air-cooled ozone generator. Regeneration of bleach wastes totaling about 10,000 gallons a year, and recovery of other chemicals can also be cost effective. [Pg.490]

Ozonation systems are comprised of four main parts, including a gas-preparation unit, an electrical power unit, an ozone generator, and a contactor which includes an off-gas treatment stage. Ancillary equipment includes instruments and controls, safety equipment and equipment housing, and structural supports. The four major components of the ozonation process are illustrated in Figure 8. [Pg.491]

Electrical power supply units vary considerably among manufacturers. Power consumption and ozone-generation capacity are proportional to both voltage and frequency. There are two methods to control the output of an ozone generator vary voltage or vary frequency. Three common electrical power supply configurations are used in commercial equipment ... [Pg.492]

Figure 9 shows the details of a typical horizontal tube-type ozone generator. This unit is preferred for larger systems. Water-cooled plate units are often used in smaller operations. However, these require considerably more floor space per unit of output than the tube-type units. The air-cooled Lowther plate type is a relatively new design. It has the potential for simplifying the use of ozone-generating equipment. However, it has had only limited operating experience in water treatment facilities. [Pg.492]

Flow rate and temperature of the cooling water to all water-cooled ozone generators. Reliable cooling is important to maintain constant ozone production and to protect the dielectrics in the generation equipment. [Pg.494]

CFCs have been widely used as cleaning solvents, as they are nonflammable and their toxicity is low. Now, flammable solvents are coming back into favor. A news item from a manufacturer described "a new ozone-friendly cleaning process for the electronics industry, which "uses a unique hydrocarbon-alcohol formulation. It did not remind readers that the mixture is flammable and that they should check that their equipment and procedures are suitable. [Pg.71]

Public concerns about air quality led to the passage of the Clean Air Act in 1970 to amendments to that act in 1977 and 1990. The 1990 amendments contained seven separate titles covering different regula-toiy programs and include requirements to install more advanced pollution control equipment and make other changes in industrial operations to reduce emissions of air pollutants. The 1990 amendments address sulfur dioxide emissions and acid rain deposition, nitrous oxide emissions, ground-level ozone, carbon monoxide emissions, particulate emissions, tail pipe emissions, evaporative emissions, reformulated gasoline, clean-fueled vehicles and fleets, hazardous air pollutants, solid waste incineration, and accidental chemical releases. [Pg.478]

Oxidative catalytic converters are used to reduce CO and HCs originating from imperfect combustion in engines. At certain temperatures, these converters may also oxidize NO to NO2. Original equipment manufacturer (OEM) particle filters (PFs) employ NO2 to oxidize trapped soot at lower temperatures. However, the excess NO2 may escape from the system as tailpipe emissions. NO2 is very toxic to humans, and it also has impacts on atmospheric ozone-forming chemistry. Alvaraz et al. have stated that the primary NO2 emissions of modern diesel cars are increasing [76]. [Pg.154]
