Outline of the thesis

This thesis is organized as follows Chapter 2 introduces an overview on chemical production processes. Relevant chemical and physical concepts are introduced which are essential to understand the dynamic nature of chemical reactions. It is shown that time series models are adequate methods to describe the behaviour of chemical production plants. 

Chapter 3 provides an overview on logistical planning models typically occurring in chemical production networks. These models are categorized by means of the transport mode. 

The thesis concludes with Chapter 5 where the main results of this work are reviewed, discussed, and summarized. 

Chapter 4 Integrated planning of chemical supply chains

First the three-step model is presented, which is the backbone of the thesis. Secondly, the review and classification attached as Appendix B is summarized. Finally, Paper I-IV are outlined. 

Any cosmological theory must inevitably rest on many diverse concepts and observations. The reader, not familiar with the central thesis, could find it difficult to appreciate the relevance of several apparently unrelated aspects without some guidance. In response we start with a brief outhne of standard cosmology, highlighting some paradoxical features, followed by an outline of the ideas that led towards an alternative model. Not to loose the thread of the argument, the final conclusion, that the observable universe is topologically closed, is stated up front. Each of the relevant aspects that support this central postulate will be repeated in more technical detail in the chapters to follow. 

The purpose of this chapter is to briefly present the outline of this thesis as well as explaining the reasons why this study is of interest. A brief description of the concept of Road Safety Development Index (RSDI) is given and the aim of the study is highlighted. In addition, this chapter outlines the structure of the thesis. 

My Ph.D. thesis has the working title Interaction and Visualization Techniques for Programming . My scholarship is running from June 1st 2006 until May 31st 2009. This paper describes the research problems that form the basis of the thesis and outlines the dissertation research. I have also submitted a short paper to Interact 2007 called Transient Visualizations . 

It is further noted that Manger [64] did use a different series expansion approach (of higher order) approximating the collisional pressure tensor components for binary mixtures based on the work of Gidaspow [42]. Their modeling approach was outlined in the thesis by Manger [64], Sects. 7.4.2 and 7.2.

The research project e osed in die work in hand thematizes the value determination of supply chain initiatives. The main objective is the development of a quantification approach that will support decision-making regarding the question of whether to implement a supply chain initiative. Giapter 1 indicates the relevance of value determination of supply chain initiatives (Chapter 1.1) and outlines the objectives of the research (Chapter 1.2). Thereafter a scientific-theoretical positioning of the research is given in Chapter 1.3 to facilitate the understanding of the research project and the contribution of the generated results. The section closes with an outline of the structure of the thesis (Chapter 1.4),... 

This chapter introduces the experimental work described in the following chapters. Some mechanistic aspects of the Diels-Alder reaction and Lewis-acid catalysis thereof are discussed. This chapter presents a critical survey of the literature on solvent ejfects on Diels-Alder reactions, with particular emphasis on the intriguing properties of water in connection with their effect on rate and selectivity. Similarly, the ejfects of water on Lewis acid - Lewis base interactions are discussed. Finally the aims of this thesis are outlined. 

Fortunately, azachalcone derivatives (2.4a-g, Scheme 2.4) turned out to be extremely suitable dienophiles for Lewis-add catalysed Diels-Alder reactions with cyclopentadiene (2.5). This reaction is outlined in Scheme 2.4 and a large part of this thesis will be devoted to the mechanistic details of this process. The presence of a chromophore in 2.4 allows kinetic studies as well as complexation studies by means of UV-vis spectroscopy. Furthermore, the reactivity of 2.4 is such that also the... 

Second, Max Dresden, who was both my thesis advisor and loyal friend. As Jay was the perfect teacher of high school physics, so Max was the quintessential physics professor. Max opened my eyes to the deej) mystery we call the universe, and taught me that the path to truth is indistinguishable from the path to beauty. The seminal idea and outline of this book-its major themes, chapters, and overall organization -benefitted greatly from Max s experience and wise counsel. I have followed our bible of ideas ever since Max and I lovingly crafted a skeletal version of it prior to our first meeting with a potential publisher over a decade ago. 

Return to one of your brainstorming sheets from Lesson 3 or 4. Use the steps outlined in the four rules for choosing a topic, and write a tentative thesis. 

Choose one of the essays for which you developed an outline in Lesson 6 or 7. List at least four supporting ideas for your thesis. Include at least one specific example and at least one fact. 

Again, you can change the wording of your thesis statement later, but for now try to express your idea so that you can write it at the top of your outline. In this way, you can always make sure that all your evidence, all your paragraphs in the body of your paper and in the... 

Why should you bother making an outline before writing First, an outline helps you think through what you will say, so it can save you time when you actually start writing. In addition, it can show omissions in your paper. An outline can even help you avoid writer s block One of the most important reasons to do an outline before you start writing is to help you evaluate your thesis. Is your thesis narrow enough Is it too broad Can you support it adequately Here s how to use your outline to test your prewriting material. 

Your outline, however, will be much more detailed. For example, you will add your thesis statement, or position, to the introduction portion of the outline, and the body will be broken down into all the examples and reasons you have chosen to support your thesis. 

Use the introduction to set up your critique. Start out by summarizing the argument, and then outline the argument s line of reasoning. Discuss the logic of the argument and identify the major flaws you plan to address in your critique. If you can, write a thesis statement that summarizes the main issues you will address in the rest of your critique. 

In this introductory chapter first an anecdote will serve to highlight the main features of near miss reporting. Then the aims of the research project underlying this thesis are outlined, followed by a short history of the project itself. The chapter is concluded by presenting an overview of the themes to be found in the remainder of this book, and an explanation of the order in which they are presented,... 

Gas vans are mentioned in numerous publications among the subject literature, but their existence is never examined critically or even questioned. The state of subject research was outlined most recently by Mathias Beer.1 We shall refer to this summary on occasion. Unfortunately, space limitations preclude an analysis of the general thesis we must restrict ourselves to touching on those points which, in our view, require closer examination in the present context, which has as its purpose the critical assessment of the evidence in the issue of the gas vans .
