Thesis Outline

A detailed literature review on esterification of carboxylic acids with different alcohols has been made. The type of catalysts used, their activity, selectivity, kinetic modeling and reaction engineering aspects have been discussed. A general review of the esterification of carboxylic acid with alcohol in presence of mineral acid or heterogeneous acid catalyst have been presented. Critical analyses of reaction engineering aspects such as external and intraparticle mass transfer effects and reactor performance models have been presented and scope and objective of the present thesis outlined. 

This chapter introduces the experimental work described in the following chapters. Some mechanistic aspects of the Diels-Alder reaction and Lewis-acid catalysis thereof are discussed. This chapter presents a critical survey of the literature on solvent ejfects on Diels-Alder reactions, with particular emphasis on the intriguing properties of water in connection with their effect on rate and selectivity. Similarly, the ejfects of water on Lewis acid - Lewis base interactions are discussed. Finally the aims of this thesis are outlined. 

Fortunately, azachalcone derivatives (2.4a-g, Scheme 2.4) turned out to be extremely suitable dienophiles for Lewis-add catalysed Diels-Alder reactions with cyclopentadiene (2.5). This reaction is outlined in Scheme 2.4 and a large part of this thesis will be devoted to the mechanistic details of this process. The presence of a chromophore in 2.4 allows kinetic studies as well as complexation studies by means of UV-vis spectroscopy. Furthermore, the reactivity of 2.4 is such that also the... 

Second, Max Dresden, who was both my thesis advisor and loyal friend. As Jay was the perfect teacher of high school physics, so Max was the quintessential physics professor. Max opened my eyes to the deej) mystery we call the universe, and taught me that the path to truth is indistinguishable from the path to beauty. The seminal idea and outline of this book-its major themes, chapters, and overall organization -benefitted greatly from Max s experience and wise counsel. I have followed our bible of ideas ever since Max and I lovingly crafted a skeletal version of it prior to our first meeting with a potential publisher over a decade ago. 

First the three-step model is presented, which is the backbone of the thesis. Secondly, the review and classification attached as Appendix B is summarized. Finally, Paper I-IV are outlined. 

Return to one of your brainstorming sheets from Lesson 3 or 4. Use the steps outlined in the four rules for choosing a topic, and write a tentative thesis. 

Second, an outline will help you determine where you need more support for your thesis. When you create an outline, you ll be able to see any gaps in the development of your ideas. Strongly supported assertions stand out in contrast to weaker ones. 

The planning steps in Section 1 have led you to the next stage in the process, writing a rough draft. You broke down the assignment, brainstormed ideas, focused your topic, developed a tentative thesis, and sketched an outline. All of that work has provided a framework that you can now flesh out with sentences and paragraphs that bring your ideas to your audience. 

Facts include statistics, definitions, recorded statements, and observations. For example, a writer is drafting an essay assessing the flat tax from her outline (Lesson 6). Here is her thesis ... 

Choose one of the essays for which you developed an outline in Lesson 6 or 7. List at least four supporting ideas for your thesis. Include at least one specific example and at least one fact. 

Set a timer for five minutes. Draft a thesis statement and create an outline for the following sample SAT essay prompt ... 

The time you spend planning for and preparing to take an essay exam can mean the difference between a great score and a poor one. Do your homework by researching your exam Understand how it s scored, what type of prompt(s) you ll encounter, what the directions say, and even how much space you ll be given to write in. Learn how to respond quickly to a prompt by practicing Come up with a thesis statement and outline in just five minutes or less. 

Gather a couple of sample prompts online or from other books about your exam (see the Additional Resources section for a list of books and online resources). Set the timer for five minutes and practice writing thesis statements and outlines. The more you practice, the easier it will be to plan your essay on exam day. 

Again, you can change the wording of your thesis statement later, but for now try to express your idea so that you can write it at the top of your outline. In this way, you can always make sure that all your evidence, all your paragraphs in the body of your paper and in the... 

It is not always easy to consolidate and narrow down the entire essence of your paper or your research into a single sentence. But don t worry. Just as you allowed yourself to brainstorm for your outline, take a blank sheet of paper and write down a full, flowing, practice paragraph that includes several sentences about why you are writing your paper and why you think the topic is important. This gives you plenty of material to draw from and sentences to edit that are already about your topic. For example, a preliminary thesis paragraph might look like this ... 

Remember your outline Each paragraph of your paper in the body was carefully outlined and supported in Point 1, Point 2, and Point 3. As you write your paper and fill in your outline with aU the facts and statistics that support your thesis, you still have to write in such a way that your evidence continues to convince your reader. Again, let s imagine the courtroom. Suppose you have been hired as an attorney to defend a client in a hit and run car accident and your client has told you that... 

If you are not comfortable knowing that you are immortal in pi, maybe you can be comfortable with the idea of Quantum Immortality. However, human consciousness works in such a way that it is only aware of one universe at a time. 

Why should you bother making an outline before writing First, an outline helps you think through what you will say, so it can save you time when you actually start writing. In addition, it can show omissions in your paper. An outline can even help you avoid writer s block One of the most important reasons to do an outline before you start writing is to help you evaluate your thesis. Is your thesis narrow enough Is it too broad Can you support it adequately Here s how to use your outline to test your prewriting material. 

If you have more to say than you can fit in your outline, you probably need to refocus your thesis statement. It s too broad. 

If you can t find enough to say in your outline, your thesis is probably too narrow. You should consider making it broader. 

Go back to the work you did in question 5. Write up your thesis and supporting statements in outline style. 

Now use the outline you wrote in question 6 to evaluate your thesis. Is your thesis broad enough Narrow enough Can you support it adequately Explain your answer. 

If you are finding it hard to do any of these three things, then you might want to reconsider your thesis statement, outline, or even your topic. Would adjustments to these items make your drafting flow more smoothly ... 

Write a thesis statement. A quick way to write a thesis statement is to turn an essay question into its answer. Whatever your thesis statement, make sure it answers the question and that you can support it. Use your outline or the notes you sketched out to help you formulate a good thesis statement that you can support.
