Organic review

Diversity is recognized as a useful approach to reduce the number of defects. The team that conducts the process hazards analysis does not implement the safety interlocks but provides the specifications for the safety interlocks to another organization for implementation. This organization reviews the specifications for each safety interlock, seeking clarifications as necessary from the process hazards analysis team and bringing any perceived deficiencies to the attention of the process hazards analysis team. 

The change does not need to be reviewed and approved by the same individuals who reviewed and approved the original document. The important factor is that the same functions or organizations review and approve the change. The reason is to subject the document to the same scrutiny as the original by personnel as qualified as those who examined the original. Providing your procedures specify the review and approval authorities in terms of functions or positions and not names, the requirement is easily satisfied. 

Consider your own experience with task teams, both within your company and in other contexts such as industry associations, professional committees, or even non-professionai groups such as volunteer or community organizations. Review what worked and didn t work, what you liked and didn t like, and what you found rewarding or frustrating about each experience. This simple exercise helps identify potential pHMIs as well as successful techniques for managing a task team. 

The knowledge of the primary structure was the basis for the construction of models of the secondary structure of the RNA molecules. When larvae fail to settle in a particular test situation, is it due to the absence of positive cues, or are there other factors that prohibit settlement, even when positive cues may be present This is a difficult question to answer because of the possibility that a negative cue may, in fact, be a neutral substance that simply makes the positive cue undetectable by a larva, rather than a substance that causes a larva to reject a potential settlement site. Much effort to demonstrate negative cues to settlement has come from the search for antifouling natural products from marine organisms (reviewed by Pawlik 3 see also Chapters 10 and 17 in this volume). However, there is little reason to believe that extracted compounds which are toxic or aversive to invertebrate larvae have any such function in nature. The best evidence to date for chemical deterrence of larval settlement comes from the work of Woodin and co-workers.212 214 Focusing on halogenated compounds released by many marine polychaete and enteropneust worms,212 they have shown inhibition of settlement of larvae of other species in the presence of the compounds.213 214...

The vulnerability assessment is an organized review of validation-related vulnerabilities concerning the facility. The above objective is best achieved by an organizational multidisciplinary task force. The internal audits and past 483s should be reviewed. The existing validation documentation should focus, in addition, on the inspection of the physical facility and critical equipment. 

In addressing the ecotoxicological implications of HD dumped in the Baltic Sea, Muribi (1997) reported on the acute toxicity of HD to the invertebrate Daphnia magna in brackish water at 19.5°C. Exposure to 0.5 mg/1 HD (the highest concentration tested) for 48 h did not induce any visible effects. Additional toxicity studies with salt- and freshwater organisms, reviewed by Muribi (1997) and Munro et al. (1999), indicate that dissolved sulfur mustard is generally not acutely toxic at concentrations below 1 mg/1 (close to its water solubility value). For some algae, a concentration of 1 mg/1 may be acutely toxic (Stock, 1996). Thus, the environmental action of HD is limited by its low water solubility. 

This series provides a format for rapid publication of the proceedings of topical conferences relevant to the chemical sciences. These conferences are often organized by international groups and usually are not sponsored by ACS. A special review committee established by the conference organizer reviews each paper. Authors then submit the revised contributions in camera-ready form.
