Skills requirements

There are many techniques available for measuring the particle-size distribution of powders. The wide size range covered, from nanometers to millimeters, cannot be analyzed using a single measurement principle. Added to this are the usual constraints of capital costs versus running costs, speed of operation, degree of skill required, and, most important, the end-use requirement. 

If the technical staff from the client company recognizes that a toller may be asked to perform new analyses and make operating decisions based upon the results, the client may help the toller develop the needed procedures and skills required to make these decisions. Typically a round robin laboratory qualification exercise will be performed. Samples of known standards and unknown concentrations of the materials to be analyzed for the toll will be prepared and sent to both laboratories. This can help ensure that equipment calibration is synchronized and that the toller is capable of performing accurate measurements. In some cases, the toller may be the party with the chemical, process, or synthesis specific expertise. 

The analysis phase of the instructional systems design (ISD) model, as referred to in Chapter 4, consists of a job task analysis based upon the equipment, operations, tools, and materials to be used as well as the knowledge and skills required for each position. Most important in this phase is the selection of the performance and learning objectives each employee must master to be successful in their job as related to the toll. 

The design phase examines the best methods with which to impart the knowledge or develop the skills required to achieve the objectives. It allows management to lay out the most cost-effective training plan. 

The book has been written in such a way that the mathematical skills required to understand the arguments are reduced to a minimum. Although, the algebra is occasionally lengthy, the contents of this book will be easily understood by undergraduate scientists who have taken basic courses in algebra and calculus. 

The most fundamental skill required is interviewing, an area in which many technically proficient managers may lack experience. Other important skills and techniques include writing findings, sampling and taking notes during the audit. 

Once you have identified and ranked necessary tasks and work products, you need to consider the skills required to accomplish them—and where you might be able to find them. Caveats. Expect limited success initially. For example, payback should not be expected until after a year or two pilots will show some success in the short term. It also takes time for management and technical staff to consistently support the idea long-term, and the skills required—for generic component design and interface specification—are more demanding.
