Based on the information flow, a number of information-theoretical performance quantities can be derived, and some important ones are compiled in Table 9.2. The information performance of analytical methods can be related to the information requirement of an given analytical problem. The resulting measures, information efficiency and information profitability, may be used to assess economical aspects of analytical chemistry.

One easy extension of equilibrium molecular dynamics is the computation of the properties of condensed matter systems in the presence of external fields. Many experiments are done by applying an external field, whether it be an electric field, heat gradient, or some type of flow. Usually, the experimentalist waits some time for the system under investigation to reach a steady state in the presence of the applied field. Measurements are then performed to deduce structural or dynamical information. Performing this task on a computer is what is commonly known as nonequilibrium molecular dynamics (NEMD). It is nonequilibrium in the sense that, in the presence of an external field, the system at the steady state will be in a state of lower entropy. Upon removing the external field, the system will return to the state of maximum entropy or the equilibrium state.

Two main things had to happen for this phenomenal turnaround to take place. The first main event was that Pete had to be told in no uncertain terms that accident occurrences are not acceptable to management and that Pete s past safety performance was unacceptable. He needed to be aware that he could not achieve success if he was not successful in safety. Although Pete seemed to understand this point, he could not get turned around without a variety of help. After all, increases are negotiated by the union, and individual performance will likely not affect the wages of the union worker. Even though this might be the case, these workers should be given an evaluation anyway. Consider the example with Pete. The first thing that needed to be done was informing Pete that accident occurrences are not acceptable. This was an informal performance evaluation. 

The approach here is usually to try and obtain more information, perform more safety analyses to provide a clearer picture or undertake a programme of education and training. Eventually one or more of the earlier patterns should be adopted.
