Sleep Loss Activates a Biological Drive State 

The neurobiology underlying any given countermeasure is somewhat less elusive. To the extent that any countermeasure stimulates the reticular activation system, either primarily or secondarily, one would predict a counteractive effect to sleepiness. But the important issue is how quickly adaptation to the stimulatory effects occurs. Reticular stimulation most likely occurs with sensory stimuli, but an adaptation to their effects is also likely. Other countermeasures may operate through different and possibly specific mechanisms (i.e., motivation, posture, movement, etc.) and then secondarily have reticular-activating effects. 

The analysis above and the literature reviewed below approach the definition of a countermeasure as the external application of stimuli or conditions that counteract the impact of sleep loss. However, in the real world people often either consciously or unconsciously make behavioral choices when experiencing sleep loss. Those behavioral choices might also be considered as countermea-

This chapter will review all of the behavioral and environmental interventions that may act as countermeasures to the disruptive effects of sleep loss on waking function. The literature addressing this question is very limited, not well organized, and quite diverse. Many questions remain unanswered. Before reviewing the evidence regarding countermeasures, we will provide a conceptual analysis of the issues surrounding them. 

Marx here tries to perform with a conceptual sleight of hand the task to which Max Weber devoted vast empirical studies to explain the emergence of the reinvestment motive in early capitalism. No short-cut, however, is possible - unless one already has the answer. The explana-tion of saving and investment must be found in the motives of individual economic agents. It cannot be derived from a conceptual analysis of money. 

I write of "a kind" of objectivity, and I write about a "transformation" in the "concept and practice" of a kind of objectivity. My language betrays three key assumptions behind my work. First, I deny there is a single unified concept of objectivity. Second, I deny that there is an eternal meaning for (any kind of) objectivity. Third, I deny that a conceptual analysis alone can be sufficient for understanding (any kind of) objectivity. Each denial has its correlative positive side, which I explore in turn here.
