On NDTnet both retrieval methods are optimally combined, however that is only successfully because the content on the server is extensive and valuable (Table 2). A full text search with all advanced search features is available and the site also provides a table of contents for each month and archives are organized in subjects together with an alphabetical index.

The ROSDAL (Representation of Organic Structures Description Arranged Linearly) syntax was developed by S. Welford, J. Barnard, and M.F. Lynch in 1985 for the Beilstein Institute. This line notation was intended to transmit structural information between the user and the Beilstein DIALOG system (Beilstein-Ohlme) during database retrieval queries and structure displays. This exchange of structure information by the ROSDAL ASCII character string is very fast. 

As can be seen in Figure 5-17, some search fields (e.g., POW [= Power]) do not need any input in the search mask this means that all entries with any content of those Helds are retrieved. However, other fields always demand an input. In case the input is omitted (for example for the decadic logarithm of the partition coefficient), a corresponding error message results. Since the PCB are more soluble in the organic phase, the input of that Field is restricted to positive values. 

In this section, the basic concepts of reaction retrieval are explained. The first example is concerned with finding an efficient way to reduce a 3-methy]cydohex-2-cnonc derivative to the corresponding 3-mcthylcyclohcx-2-cnol compound (see Figure 5-24). As this is a conventional organic reaction, the CIRX database should contain valuable information on how to syntbesi2e this product easily. 

The Novosibirsk Institute of Organic Chemistry has developed a method for computer-aided retrieval of stmctural information from H-nmr using its database of 50,000 spectra (72). Eraser WUHams Ltd. (Scientific Systems) has special software to search its E-nmr database (73). Protein nmr data have been compiled into a relational database at the University of Wisconsin (74). 

Citation Searching. In the scholarly Hterature, authors cite earHer pubHcations that relate to the work being reported, thus a subject relationship exists between the citing and cited Hterature. This relationship has formed the basis for the Science Citation Index and related products, developed by the Institute for Scientific Information. Known as Scisearch in its on-line version, the Science Citation Index has become an important information retrieval tool in the second half of the twentieth century. It has been used for straightforward subject searching, in which mode it complements traditional indexed databases and indexes. It has also become a popular tool for hihliometric studies of various sorts, such as attempts to measure the relative impact of research carried out by different individuals or organizations, or the relative impact of pubHcations in different journals. 

Tar sand, also variously called oil sand (in Canada) or bituminous sand, is the term commonly used to describe a sandstone reservoir that is impregnated with a heavy, viscous black extra heavy cmde oil, referred to as bitumen (or, incorrectly, as native asphalt). Tar sand is a mixture of sand, water, and bitumen, but many of the tar sand deposits in the United States lack the water layer that is beHeved to cover the Athabasca sand in Alberta, Canada, thereby faciHtating the hot-water recovery process from the latter deposit. The heavy asphaltic organic material has a high viscosity under reservoir conditions and caimot be retrieved through a weU by conventional production techniques. 

In addition to chemicals covered under TRI, many other chemicals are released. For example, the EPA Office of Air Quality Planning and Standards has compiled air pollutant emission factors for determining the total air emissions of priority pollutants (e.g., VOCs, SO, NO, CO, particulates, etc.) from many refinery sources. The EPA Office of Aerometric Information Retrieval System (AIRS) contains a wide range of information related to stationary sources of air pollution, including the emissions of a number of air pollutants which may be of concern within a particular industry. With the exception of volatile organic compounds (VOCs), there is little overlap with the TRI chemicals reported above. 

The RMC HARIS (Hazards and Reliability Information System) programs provide organizations with a data ban)c of reliability, maintainability, accident, and source-abstract data. The programs permit the input of information in a standard data sheet format. Search capability is built into the programs for retrieval of these data sheets against specific search profiles. HARIS presently contains over 4400 data sheets. 

Communication is the process of sending information from one location to another or from one person to another by means that enable the sender to send the information to the intended recipient and the intended recipient to receive, retrieve, and interpret the information. Locations and individuals can be geographically dispersed or within the confines of an organization, where information can flow between individuals with various types of communication including direct contact.
