New Product Developments

Constant product development has been a feature in the development of the PPO/PPE product family. Higher conductivity, mineral-filled and low odour emission grades are some examples of how the product has been improved to open up new market opportunities. GE Plastics also introduced an improved, conductive version of Noryl GTX (PPO/PA blend), which dispensed with the need to prime plastic parts before painting them. By adding conductive material, it was possible to develop a thermoplastic that makes it easier to paint hard-to-reach places.

New product development programs present another type of challenge to the researcher. Often the researcher has no guidelines for evaluating the new product and must formulate a unique plan for developiag enough iaformation to constmct a matrix that would show the risks and rewards of the project. Reference 6 presents 10 commandments for new-product development. 

Product development models are the driving force for delivering the product to market on time and at the right cost. In general, the models in the literature can be divided into just two types sequential and concurrent. Each has its own characteristics, but there are several requirements that a new product development model should fulfil (Sum, 1992) ...

Implementing an inherent safety review process is one mechanism companies can use to institutionalize inherent safety. The review process should integrate well with company systems for process safety management, new product development, and project execution. Safety, health, and environmental considerations in the new product or process development effort can be strengthened via the introduction of the inherent safety review. Companies may also build inherently safer design concepts into their existing process safety management system and process hazard reviews. 

The way many companies identify resource requirements is to solicit resource budgets from each department covering a 1 to 5 year period. However, before the managers can prepare budgets they need to know what requirements they will have to meet. They will need access to the corporate plans, sales forecasts, new product development plans, marketing plans, production plans, etc. as well as the quality policies, objectives, and procedures. 

The company was a private label manufacturer of home maintenance and personal care products. Its laboratory would be involved with new product development, evaluation of raw materials, testing of competitive products, and quality control. Laboratory personnel would also be responsible for chemical safety in the plant and for proper waste disposal.

CEFIC has estimated that more than 60% of the 2,000 biocidal active ingredients and of the 20,000 formulated biocidal products containing them currently marketed in the EU may eventually be withdrawn as a result of the implementation of the Biocidal Products Directive. A joint EPA-industry program is proposed to make it easier for the chemical industry to comply with the PMN requirements of TSCA and hopefully encourage more new product development activity. This program includes a simplified reporting form promulgating exemptions for those classes of new chemicals...
