As part of the Third National Health and Nutrition Evaluation Survey (NHANES 111), the Environmental Health Laboratory Sciences Division of the National Center for Environmental Health, Centers for Disease Control, will be analyzing human blood samples for trichloroethylene and other volatile organic compounds. These data will give an indication of the frequency of occurrence and background levels of these compounds in the general population.

Dr. Gold has served on the Panel of Expert Reviewers for the National Toxicology Program and on the boards of the Harvard Center for Risk Analysis and the Annapolis Center she was a member of the Harvard Risk Management Group and is at present a member of the Advisory Committee to the Director, National Center for Environmental Health, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). She is among the most frequently cited scientists in her field and was awarded the Annapolis Center Prize for risk communication.

It is desirable to collect as many different matrices from each study participant as is feasible and to process them with consideration of both immediately planned analyses of biomarkers and future uses. For example, several Children s Environmental Health Centers obtained urine, peripheral blood, cord blood, breast milk, meconium, saliva, hair, placental tissue, infant formula, indoor and outdoor air, and house dust from longitudinal birth cohort studies (Eskenazi et al. 2005). The centers have analyzed concentrations of numerous compounds in those biologic and environmental samples, such as pesticides, phthalates, mercury, lead, cotinine, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbone (PAHs), PAH-DNA adducts, allergens, endotoxin, antioxidant micronutrients, cholinesterase, and thyroid hormones. Most centers also banked samples for future analyses.

At a certain moment my health deteriorated very quickly and I broke down. Doctors still had no clue but they did see that I was very ill. The only way out was a treatment in the Environmental Health Center in Dallas with Dr. Rea. There they were able to ascertain serious damage to my immune and nervous systems. Tests also confirmed that I react strongly to various everyday chemical substances, numerous nutrients, molds, pollen, medicines, et cetera. Staying in the clinic was tough. There wasn t a single food item that I could endure without side effects. Many chemicals incited strong reactions and I often became unconscious. Many times I was hooked up to oxygen and an IV.
