Many studies published during the last few decades have suggested that hyperhomocysteinemia is a risk factor for coronary artery disease (CAD), stroke, and thromboembolic disease. The Homocysteine Studies Collaboration metaanalysis of 30 studies concluded that elevated tHcy is a moderate risk factor for ischemic heart disease a level 3 xmol/L lower reduces the risk with an odds ratio of 0.89 (95% Cl = 0.83-0.96). The same was true for homocysteine as a risk factor for stroke (odds ratio = 0.81 95%5CI = 0.69-0.95) (6). A meta-analysis of 40 studies of the MTHFR 677 C > T polymorphism demonstrated a mildly increased risk of coronary heart disease with an odds ratio of 1. 16 (95% Cl = 1.05-1.28) (25). [Pg.178]

Brief interventions can be as simple as feedback about the consequences of heavy alcohol use for a person (for example, You have some liver problems, and we can trace it to your drinking ) or advice to cut down or stop drinking. They are based on the idea that alcohol problems exist on a continuum of severity and that interventions can occur at any point along that continuum. The research has shown that for the most part brief interventions have been used with people who have mild to moderate alcohol problems they are effective compared to no treatment in reducing alcohol consumption to below risk levels. There is some speculation about who is most helped by brief interventions and why they work. These clearly are topics for future research. [Pg.394]

Biosafety Level 2 applies to facilities in which work is done with the broad spectrum of indigenous moderate-risk agents present in the community and associated with human disease of varying severity. [Pg.297]

Reference soil was collected in a reference site in Elorence (Italy). Real soil samples were collected in the Associated National Chemical Companies (ACNA) site (Cengio, SV, Italy). ACNA is a closed organic chemical industrial factory active since 1882 with the production of explosives (nitroglycerin, dynamite, and trinitrotoluene), paints, nitric and sulphuric acids, phenols, and amines, with serious levels of contamination of soil and surface waters, where a remediation and bonification plan started in 1999. The serious enviromnental contamination of this area determined its inclusion in the list of national priorities for enviromnental reclamation. The sampling was performed from the soil layers (0-30 cm) in a specific ACNA site, called hill n°5, on March 2003. The hill was made of waste from the industry accumulated during the years and was divided into four zones zone 1 with low contamination level zone 2 with pseudoreference zone 3 with moderate pollution level, and zone 4 with high ecological risk. [Pg.256]

Based on the above level classification of risk probability and consequence, the risk level of each component is defined in accordance with the failure modes and consequent influence (Table 3). After determination of risk level, a preliminary judgment can be conducted. For low-risk area, generally it is unnecessary to adopt any measures and the devices can be used continuously with proper extension of inspection time intervals With respect to the middle risk area, the devices can be used within the specified inspection period, yet more importance should be attached to inspection or monitoring with moderate arrangement of maintenance plans, wherein the determination of inspection period subject to the fact that the risk level remains middle level in the next inspection As for the midhigh risk area, the reasons for the risks should be analyzed, and the inspection time intervals should be shortened, while the main positions causing midhigh risk should be restricted, or... [Pg.1188]

National guidelines are being developed to standardize CRP testing techniques and interpretation of the results. A paper published in the New England Journal of Medicine specifies three levels of risk that will probably be used as guidelines. Levels of CRP below one milligram per liter of blood are considered to be low. Levels between 1 and 3 mg/L are considered moderate, and levels above 3 mg/L are considered high. [Pg.301]

PST prepares both general and periodic threat assessments subjected to the risk of terrorist attack. The risk assessments of PST are in most cases not giving any more information than their exact assessment of the threat which has been either low or moderate. When PST decided to increase the risk level in Norway from low to moderate after Al-Qaeda announced the second terrorism threat, there was hardly any information about what the assessment was based on and why they decided to increase the level to moderate, which they did not after the first. However, PST contributes with qualitative statements that give the impression of an imminent terrorist threat. Jam Hohne, the current Director of PST, claims that it is just a matter of time before terrorists strikes Scandinavia (Jam Holme, Director of PST, in Aftenposten 15.12.2005). [Pg.2139]

Hedonic labor market equilibrium can have a massing of workers and firms only at the zero incremental risk level. As seen in Figure 4.2, 41 percent of the workforce chooses employment in firms that are no more dangerous than everyday life. In our baseline hedonic labor market equilibrium 55 percent of workers choose what could be labeled low-risk jobs (0 < ti < 0.001), 19 percent choose what we will call moderate-risk jobs (0 < n 0.002), and 26 percent choose high-risk jobs (71 > 0.002). [Pg.116]

Define the Risk. Conclude with a statement that addresses the probability of a hazards-related incident or exposure occurring, the expected severity of adverse results, and a risk category (e.g., high, serious, moderate, or low). Using a risk assessment matrix for that purpose assists one in communicating on the risk level. [Pg.115]
