Hepatic Effects. Hepatic failure was reported in the case of an accidental ingestion of trichloroethylene that led to an acute overdose (Kleinfeld and Tabershaw 1954). In other case studies, blood analyses revealed no hepatic injury in a man who drank several tablespoons of trichloroethylene (Todd 1954) or in women who drank about 20 mL (Morreale 1976) or an unknown quantity (Perbellini et al. 1991). Self-reported liver problems were not increased among persons in the trichloroethylene subregistry who were exposed to trichloroethylene in their drinking water (ATSDR 1994 Burg et al. 1995). [Pg.87]

Several clinically distinct forms of Wilson s disease have been described. Thus, a relatively mild, late-onset form of the disease, has been described in Jewish patients from Eastern Europe. These patients usually present with the neurologic signs of the disease. In contrast, the more common early-onset (childhood) forms of the disease often present first with liver problems, followed by neurologic manifestations. [Pg.774]

Tacrine is not without its problems. It produces typical cholinergic side effects (nansea, cramping, loss of appetite, rnnny nose, and diarrhea). In addition, tacrine can be toxic to the liver in some patients. If liver problems develop while taking tacrine, they reverse when the medication is discontinued. Nevertheless, all patients shonld routinely undergo blood tests of liver function before starting tacrine and periodically dnring tacrine therapy. [Pg.300]

Of the mood stabilizers, valproic acid (Depakene, Depakote) is the most widely used. Like the other mood stabilizers, its onset of action can be delayed by several days. Valproic acid is a reasonably well tolerated mood stabilizer. It does occasionally cause tremor, and it can on rare occasion lower platelet counts or cause liver problems. For this reason, blood monitoring is required when starting this medication. In addition, valproic acid can irritate the stomach lining, but this problem is largely overcome by using the buffered form sodium divalproex (Depakote or Depakote ER). Finally, valproic acid can also cause hair loss or drowsiness. [Pg.302]

Pravachol appeared to increase adherence, Lipitor s DTCA efforts appear to have had a negative impact. Further analysis suggested that the unexpected finding for Lipitor stemmed from the FDA s requirement that DTCA television advertisements must mention the most common side effects. She reasoned that television advertisements make side effects more salient than does print advertising. Professional actors in the first television ads for Lipitor prominently mentioned side effects of possible liver problems and muscular pain, a task that is usually carried out less prominently and is reserved for unobserved narrators. Discussions Wosinska had with industry analysts suggested that the prominent side effects mentioned in the Lipitor ads may have made patients more anxious, and that it may have affected their adherence. [Pg.192]

While overdoses are uncommon with pure Ecstasy, they do occur. When someone takes too much Ecstasy, he or she may vomit continuously and vigorously, have fast or difficult breathing, or pass out. People with existing heart, kidney, or liver problems are much more likely to suffer from an overdose when taking Ecstasy. [Pg.35]

Steroids that aid in muscle development are called anabolic steroids. They are synthetic derivatives of testosterone, thus have the same muscle-building effect as testosterone. There are more than 100 different anabolic steroids which, vary in structure, duration of action, relative effects and toxicities. Androstenedione, stanozolol and dianabol are anabolic steroids. They are used to treat people suffering from traumas accompanied by muscle deterioration. The use of anabolic steroid can lead to a number of dangerous side-effects, including lowered levels of high density lipoprotein cholesterol, which benefits the heart, and elevated levels of harmful low density lipoprotein, stimulation of prostate tumours, clotting disorders and liver problems. [Pg.357]

As an aside, in March of 2005, Abbott Laboratories, the maker of Cylert , decided to take its drug off the U.S. market because of increasing concerns about it causing liver problems. Cylert had been available in the United States for 30 years for the treatment of ADHD and narcolepsy. However, the generic form of Cylert (pemoline) is still available. [Pg.84]

The newer drugs therefore represent a substantial improvement over original antihistamines. They are not, however, devoid of side effects. For example, certain nonsedating antihistamines such as astemizole and terfenadine may be cardiotoxic, and problems such as severe ventricular arrhythmias (torsades de pointes) have occurred when these drugs are taken in high doses or taken by individuals with preexisting cardiac and liver problems.70,71 These cardiac effects, however,... [Pg.371]

Therapeutically used types of estrogens and prog-estins are listed in Tables 30-4 and 30-5. Both types of hormones can be administered in their natural form (estradiol and progesterone), and several synthetic derivatives of each type are also available. Most of the drugs listed in Tables 30-4 and 30-5 are available as oral preparations, and many conditions can be conveniently treated by oral administration. These hormones may also be administered transdermally via patches, creams, or gels the transdermal route may offer certain advantages, such as decreased side effects and liver problems.86,130 Certain preparations can be... [Pg.446]

The patient was born to nonconsanguineous parents from Chihuahua, Mexico, after an uncomplicated pregnancy and delivery. A brother had died at 3 months of age of a liver problem after an unexplained coma. The parents and three other siblings were well. [Pg.101]
