THE PERIODIC TABLE (SECTION 2.5) The periodic table is an arrangement of the elements in order of increasing atomic number. Elements with similar properties are placed in vertical columns. The elements in a column are known as a group. The elements in a horizontal row are known as a period. The metallic elements (metals), which comprise the majority of the elements, dominate the left side and the middle of the table the nonmetallic elements (nonmetals) are located on the upper right side. Many of the elements that lie along the line that separates metals from nonmetals are metalloids. [Pg.72]

Formation of simple crystal structures in Cu-Co-Ni-Cr-Al-Fe-Ti-V alloys with multiprincipal metallic elements, Metall. Mater. Trans. A 35A (2004) 2533-2536. [Pg.155]

A metal silicide is a compoimd that has silicon with more electropositive metal elements. Metal silicides have been the subject of numerous studies because of their potential applications in Si-based microelectronics and optoelectronics. They can be classified into two groups metallic and semiconducting silicides. Some metallic silicides (VsSi, NbaSi, CoSi2, etc.) are superconductors. Table 4.1 summarizes some physical properties of metallic silicides. [Pg.565]

To obtain a more accurate and reproducible series it is best to use the more exact electrode potential (q.v.), or oxidation-reduction potential. It is in this way that the original series applied to metals has been extended to non-metallic elements. Metals which will liberate hydrogen gas from dilute acids will be above hydrogen in the series, with a negative electrode potential, while those metals and non-metallic elements which will not liberate hydrogen from dilute acids will be below hydrogen in the series and will have positive electrode potentials. [Pg.86]

The wave function T i oo ( = 11 / = 0, w = 0) corresponds to a spherical electronic distribution around the nucleus and is an example of an s orbital. Solutions of other wave functions may be described in terms of p and d orbitals, atomic radii Half the closest distance of approach of atoms in the structure of the elements. This is easily defined for regular structures, e.g. close-packed metals, but is less easy to define in elements with irregular structures, e.g. As. The values may differ between allo-tropes (e.g. C-C 1 -54 A in diamond and 1 -42 A in planes of graphite). Atomic radii are very different from ionic and covalent radii. [Pg.45]

Boron trichloride, BCI3. Colourless mobile liquid, m.p. — 107°C, b.p. 12-5°C. Obtained directly from the elements or by heating B2O3 with pels in a sealed tube. The product may be purified by distillation in vacuo. It is extremely readily hydrolysed by water to boric acid. TetrachJoroborates containing the BCJ4 " ion are prepared by addition of BCI3 to metal chlorides. [Pg.65]

CoAsS, are also used as sources. The ore is roasted and Co is precipitated as the hydroxide and then reduced to Co with carbon (hep below 417 - C, cep to m.p.). The metal is silvery white and readily polished. It dissolves in dilute acids and is slowly oxidized in air. Adsorbs hydrogen strongly. The main use of cobalt is in alloys. Cobalt compounds are used in paints and varnishes, catalysts. Cobalt is an essential element in the diet. World production 1976 32 000 tonnes metal. [Pg.104]
