Pressure measuring

The sum of the squared differences between calculated and measures pressures is minimized as a function of model parameters. This method, often called Barker s method (Barker, 1953), ignores information contained in vapor-phase mole fraction measurements such information is normally only used for consistency tests, as discussed by Van Ness et al. (1973). Nevertheless, when high-quality experimental data are available. Barker s method often gives excellent results (Abbott and Van Ness, 1975). [Pg.97]

Liquid Manometers. Liquid manometers were used extensively by scientists in the seventeenth through the early twentieth centuries to measure pressure. The practice of expressing pressure as a certain height of Hquid evolved from this usage. The typical Hquid manometer consists of a cyclindrical glass U-tube partially fiUed with Hquid. One end is coimected to the process the other can be either open or closed (Fig. 1). [Pg.20]

Vacuum gauges may be broadly classified as either direct or indirect (10). Direct gauges measure pressure as force pet unit area. Indirect gauges measure a physical property, such as thermal conductivity or ionisation potential, known to change in a predictable manner with the molecular density of the gas. [Pg.26]

Most thermometry using the KTTS direcdy requites a thermodynamic instmment for interpolation. The vapor pressure of an ideal gas is a thermodynamic function, and a common device for reali2ing the KTTS is the helium gas thermometer. The transfer function of this thermometer may be chosen as the change in pressure with change in temperature at constant volume, or the change in volume with change in temperature at constant pressure. It is easier to measure pressure accurately than volume thus, constant volume gas thermometry is the usual choice (see Pressure measurement). [Pg.396]

Bottles of carbonated beverage are tested for carbonation using a Zahm-Nagel or Ashcroft carbonation tester. The carbonation can be calculated from the measured pressure and temperature values. Canned beverage is tested for carbonation and air content using a Zahm air tester. [Pg.16]

For example, the measured pressure exerted by an enclosed gas can be thought of as a time-averaged manifestation of the individual molecules random motions. When one considers an individual molecule, however, statistical thermodynamics would propose its random motion or pressure could be quite different from that measured by even the most sensitive gauge which acts to average a distribution of individual molecule pressures. The particulate nature of matter is fundamental to statistical thermodynamics as opposed to classical thermodynamics, which assumes matter is continuous. Further, these elementary particles and their complex substmctures exhibit wave properties even though intra- and interparticle energy transfers are quantized, ie, not continuous. Statistical thermodynamics holds that the impression of continuity of properties, and even the soHdity of matter is an effect of scale. [Pg.248]

Elastic-Element Methods Elastic-element pressure-measuring devices are those in which the measured pressure deforms some elastic material (usually metallic) within its elastic limit, the magnitude of the deformation being approximately proportional to the applied pressure. These devices may be loosely classified into three types Bourdon tube, bellows, and diaphragm. [Pg.761]

This subsertion deals with the techniques of measuring pressures, temperatures, velocities, and flow rates of flowing fluids. [Pg.884]

For measuring pressures of corrosive fluids, slurries, and similar process fluids which may foul Bourdon tubes, a cfiemical gauge, consisting of a Bourdon gauge equipped with an appropriate flexible diaphragm to seal off the process fluid, may be used. The combined volume of the tube and the connection between the diaphragm and the tube is filled with an inert liquid. These gauges are availabTe commercially. [Pg.891]

Permeability Bulk sohd permeability is important in the iron and steel industiy where gas-solid reactions occur in the sinter plant and blast furnace. It also strongly influences compac tion processes where entrapped gas can impede compaction, and solids-handling equipment where restricted gas flow can impede product flowabihty. The permeabihty of a granular bed is inferred from measured pressure drop under controlled gas-flow conditions. [Pg.1878]
