The conventional wisdom predicts cross-linking on the basis of radiation studies of ordinary vinyl polymers. On the other hand, there seems to be no previous mention of the radiation sensitivity of maleic anhydride polymers in the literature. 

From the table It appears that the Izod Impact strength Improves as the Interfacial adhesion increases. This Is also concluded In a recent publication about nylon 6.6 compounded with polyethylene-g-maleic anhydride polymer (15). Addition of more rubber In system 3 (30 %) affords hardly any addltonal Improvement In toughness, but the flexural modulus, which In ABA block copolymers Is already lower than In a dispersed rubber system, Is more than halved. 

A sample of poly (2,2-diraethyl-4,7-dihydro-l,3-dioxepin-alt-maleic anhydride) polymers was fractionated and briefly examined for antiviral properties (31). The copolymer was fractionated through Amicon filters into a 1,000-10,000 and 10,000-30,000 molecular weight cuts. Both molecular weight fractions were examined for effect against mice inoculated (ip) with 106 Ehrlich Ascites tumor cells. Five days after inoculation the animals were sacrificed and total peritoneal exudate cells were counted with a hemo-cytometer. Under these conditions, Ottenbrite (31) showed that the 1,000-10,000 molecular weight fraction of the ID-MA copolymer was as effective as Pyran (control in experiment) for control of Ehrlich Ascites tumor cells. Pyran, the copolymer of divinyl ether-MA is a well known antitumor agent (32) and interferon inducer (33).

A morphological analysis revealed that the blends and composites which contain ethylene ethyl acrylate-maleic anhydride polymer exhibit a better elastomer phase dispersion with smaller domain sizes in comparison to the other elastomer. The addition of the carbon nanotubes also improves the mechanical properties of the samples for both elastomer types [83].

The poly(methyl vinyl ether/maleic anhydride) polymer is used as a thickener in many products such as lotions and creams, styling gels, and shampoos. This is available under the trade name Gantrez from GAP Corporation. The mechanism of thickening of this pol3rmer is similar to the polyacrylic acid polymers. The U.S. Patent 5385729 is an example of poly(methyl vinyl ether/maleic anhydride) polymer as a thickener in hair- or skin-treating gels [24]. 

The dynamic mechanical properties (shear modulus and loss tangent) of polymer composites prepared from carbon fiber and thermosetting and thermoplastic resins were studied in the frequency range 0.01-5.0 Hz. The stxrface of the fiber was covered by the interlayer from styrene-co-maleic anhydride polymer. It was estabhshed that different interphase composition causes a difference of dynamic mechanical behavior and that the interphase contributes both to glass transition and to energy dissipation. 

Figure 3.4 shows some selected examples of preformed polymers. Structure (1) is an octadecene-l-maleic anhydride polymer, which is hydrolyzed on the subphase surface over a period of several hours to produce the maleic acid derivative. By controlling the degree of hydrolysis, the amount of free acid groups, and hence the ionic concentration in the monomer, can be controlled. This material has been used to vary the Schottky barrier height of GaP by using different acid anhydride ratios [14].
