Pyrolysis of the resulting polymer generates a series of pyrrole derivatives diagnostic for the nature of the copolymer. Similar derivatization with methylamine can be performed on copolymers containing maleic anhydride [72].

About 1-5 L of air at a flow rate of 10-50 mL/min is passed through a solid sorbent tube containing maleic anhydride on Chromosorb 104. The analyte forms an adduct and is desorbed with ethyl acetate and injected into GC-FID with a column 5% OV-17 on Chromosorb W-HP. 

Dynamical mechanical thermal analysis (DMTA) results also indicate that the effective rubber volume fraction is greater in the blends containing maleic anhydride grafted rubber. 

Polypropylene (PP) alloys with ETP are in an early stage of development. Blends with specialty resins are even less advanced. The main source of difficulties is the antagonistic immisdbility of PP with these polymers. In many cases, addition of a compatibilizer to PP/ETP blends reduces the crystallinity, which in turn lowers the performance. Optimization of composition and blending methods is not easy. The most commonly used compatibilizing agents contain maleic anhydride functionality, e.g. maleated-PP (PP-MA). Their reaction with such ETP as PA or PET depends on the reaction conditions time, temperature and stress. The compatibilizing copolymer content increases upon reprocessing.

In a similar way styrene and vinylacetate monomers can be determined in polymerization reactions.In the determination of styrene the reaction mixture containing maleic anhydride is boiled under reflux for 3 hr. The unreacted maleic anhydride is hydrolysed to maleic acid and determined (in the determination of styrene) in aqueous solutions of pH 3-0 or (in the determination of vinylacetate) in benzene solutions.
